ANOTHER PATRIOT GONE!
DIED--At his seat, in Halifax county, Virginia, on Thursday the 10th inst. GEN. JOHN B. SCOTT, aged 53 years. In his life, he calibrated the rare character of the gentleman, the patriot and the Christian. Truly he might be called a friend to his country--in youth, he found her battles, in riper years aided in her councils, and at a late period, and indeed to the very last day of his life, he was employed in supporting her independence by encouraging and promoting domestic manufactures.
For eight years, he had professed the religion of Christ, and cast his lot among the humble followers of the meek and lowly Jesus; c---sing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season. During his his illness he was not only delivered from the fear of death, but supported and comforted by the promises of the Gospel of Christ; and manifested to his surrounding friends that he had not followed a cunningly devised fable--He witnessed a good confession to the end, by often declaring his unshaken confidence in the promises of God, and his entire willingness to depart and be with Christ. To a Minster of the Gospel who was quoting some passages of scripture for his consolation, he replied with emphasis, "our light afflictions which are but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory." Finding by experience in the hour which tries men's souls the value of that religion he had embraced, with the sincerity and solemnity of a dying father he recommended......(there was no more of this obituary presented-jek) He was buried on 11 February 1814 at Scott Home Site Cemetery in Scottsburg, Halifax, VA. findagrave.com, photo of double tombstone, of John B.
