Mrs. Jane P. Rudy, wife of Wm. R. Rudy, died Sunday morning about 4 o'clock at her home near Cairo from a stroke of paralysis. She was about 70 years of age and but few if any were more esteemed bythe people of her neighborhood or by those who were her acquaintances. Being a noble Christian worker for many years her infrimaties in the past eight years having in no way decreased her faithfulness. About 1894 she was stricken with paralysis and from its effects soon afterwards lost her sight. Abut ten or fifteen days ago she was again attacked with paralysis from which she died. The burial was at the family graveyard near Cairo yesterday afternoon. Parents: Woodson SMITH and Jane Murray SAVAGE.

JOHN DOUGLAS SMITH, age 86, passed away on July 22, 2003. Mr. Smith was born on Feburary 12, 1917 in Houston, Texas to Travis L. Smith, Jr. and Cary Neblett Smith. He graduated from San Jacinto High School in 1933 and entered Texas A&M College, where he earned a degree in Petroleum Engineering in 1937. He was a member of the Aggie Band and Aggieland Orchestra.
Soon after graduation he went to work for Sun Oil Co. in the Beeville area. From 1939 until March 1941, he worked as a Petroleum Engineer and manager of oil operation with his father in Brazoria County. In March 1941, he went on active duty with the U.S. Army, reporting as a Second Lieutenant at Fort Knox, Kentucky.
He was assigned to the 84th Armored Recon. Battalion of the 4th Armored Division, and then the 85th Armored Rec. Battalion, 5th Armored Division. Mr. Smith then volunteered for and was detailed to duty for training with the Army Air Corps.
He received his wings in December 1943. After receiving traing as a B-24 Bomber pilot, he flew with his crew to join the 743rd Squadron, 455th Bomb Group, 15th Air Force in Italy. Between May 1944 and April 1945, he flew 35 missions. During this time, he was lead pilot, Operation Officer, and Squadron Commander of both the 740th and 743rd Squardrons. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal, Purple Heart and other medals while assigned to this units.
On June 21, 1942, he married Margaret Jane Swartz, a native of Findlay, Ohio. After release from active duty as a Major in the Air Corps, he returned to Houston and again engaged in oil operations with his father, becoming manager and engineer for Smith and Sons Oil Company until 1975. After that time, and until 2000, he was Trustee of the T. L. Smith, Jr. Family Trusts, and President/Manger of TLS Properties Limited. Mr. Smith was a member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers, AIME, Houston Geological Society, Alumni Association of San Jacinto High School, Wednesday Lunch Bunch, 5th Armored Dvision Association, 455th Bomb Group Association, Houston A&M Club, Texas Aggie Band Association, Aggie Petroleum Engineers Society of Houston, 12th Man Foundation, Diamond Centry Club Member-TAMU Association of Former Students, Aggie Club, Texas A&M Presidents Endowed Scholars donor, Colonneh Club, Pioneer Oil Producers Society, and Sons of the Republic of Texas.
Mr. Smith is survived by his wife, Nadine Loveless Smith; his sons, John D. Smith, Jr. and wife, Janette, Bruce A Smith and wife, Cindy; his daughter, Peggy S. Atwood and husband, Kirby, all of Houston, stepdaughters, Carolyn Schlicher and her children, Christine and Coe; and Lucinda Henderson and her children, Barrett and Whitney, of New Mexico; grandchildren, Kevin Smith and wife, Teresa, Todd Smith, Emily Smith, Garrett Smith, Logan Smith, Jennifer Jones, Cary Jones, William Smith, Kristin Smith, David Smith and Chelsea Smith; great grandchildren, Hannah Smith and Kyle Smith; niece, Diane Simpson and husband, Don; sister-in-law Mary Ann Wood and husband, Harold; nephew Thomas Wood and wife, Trudy; niece, Susan Wood; sister-in-law, Goldie Smith; brother-in-law, John Swartz; and many friends. he was predeceased by his parents; his wife, Jane, his brothers, Cary N. Josephine Smith, 60, of Little Rock, died on December 9, 2007. She was born on August 10, 1947. She is survived by her parents Stephen Harrow and Kathryn Chamberlin Smith, her cousins, Grace White of Topeka, Kansas and William Henson of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, her beloved Bible study group, a host of devoted friends in Maine and the Josettes: Beth Johnson Bridgforth, Janice Goodwin, Georgianna Gunn and Gay White.
Josephine attended Forest Park Elementary School, Forest Heights Junior High and Hall High School. After graduation, she attended Lindenwood College in St. Charles, Missouri where she graduated in 1969. Upon graduation she moved to Boston, Massachusetts with her college roommate, Sue Warburg Shearer. Josephine graduated one year later from Katherine Gibbs Secretarial School and went to work for an urban planning firm, Marshall & Kaplan, where she worked for two years. She then moved to her summer home in Cape Porpoise, Maine, where she happily resided and worked at the Breakwater Inn for twelve years.
In 1984 she returned to Little Rock and became a travel consultant for James F. Goodwin Travel. She retired in 2000.
She enjoyed her remaining years spending wonderful summers in Maine. Josephine was an outdoor enthusiast and shared ocean kayaking,mud flat walking, walks on Goose Rocks Beach, hiking in Acadia Natioanl Park and lobster bakes with her friends from Maine and Arkansas.
Josephine was a member of Second Presbyterian Church, the Little Rock Garden Club, the Country Club of Little Rock, and Lakeside Country Club. For the past six years she was a dedicated Bible student, enjoying her relationship and faith in Christ, with Whom she now resides.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 12, 2007, at Second Presbyterian Church. Following the sercie there will be a visitation and celebration of Josie's life in the Fellowship Hall of the Church.
