Silas Trimble RIGGS was born on 16 February 1841 in , Scott, IL. He died on 28 September 1916 at the age of 75 in Salem, Marion, OR. He was buried in Salt Creek Cemetery, Polk, OR. Obit from OR Historical Society Files, newspaper unknown, dated 6 Oct 1916
Silas T. Riggs was born near Exeter, Scott county, Illinois, on February 16, 1941 and died at his home in Salem on September 28, 1916, at the age of 75 years, seven months and 12 days, following a brief illness. He had been in rather feeble health for several years never having entgirely recovered from the effectgs of a fall, but he was always able to walk about among his friends and in a quiet, gentle way, to tell of pioneer days and people and events covering a long life. He was the oldest son of Zadoc T. Riggs who was born in Missouri in 1811. His mother's maidenname was Lieb and she was born in Tennessee.
The family crossed the plains in 1851 when he was ten years old. It was a sad journey, for the father sickened and died on the way. The widowed mother and her family of six small children, after many difficulties reached their destination and settled near Salt Creek where other relatives had preceeded them. There the children were reared, went to school, married, and their children, and children's children played and were schooled. One brother and two sisters died.
Mr. Riggs was married to Sarah Jane Bones in 1864. She died in 1873 leaving one daughter, Hettie, who is now Mrs. Starr and lives on the old Salt Creek place. Besides the daughter the only living direct descendants are her three children, Harold, Silas and Vesta Starr.
In 1876 Mr. Riggs married Sarah E. Myer. To them was born a daughter, Clara, who died 21 years ago at the age of 18. For the past 24 years Mr. and Mrs. Riggs have made their home in Salem. Mr. Riggs joined the Christian church at the age of 19 and for many years has been a faithful member of the Salem First church. He was always in his place at the Sunday service if he was al all able to be about. He had a host of friends among the pioneers and those who knew him at his best speak of him as a man among men, a clear thinker, a good manager and, above all, a loved by all. His favorite songs were "Will There Be Any Star in My Crown?" and "He Will Never Leave Me Alone." The funeral was conducted on Sunday, October 1st by the pastor, Rev. F. T. Porter, from the church he loved. The church was so filled with friends and loved ones that the sorrowing hearts were comforted as they realized the sympathy and esteem thujs expressed.
From the church the remains were taken to the family burial grounds at Salt Creek and laid to rest with those who had gone before. There in a little valley the friends gathered round and sang "Going Down the Valley One by One," and laid him away under the flowers near his old home, his boyhood playground and the school house where he prepared for manhood's work.
Those who are left are glad for his life, glad that he had many friends who will miss him, and glad he is now at rest. To the faithful wife all bring sympathy inher loneliness. For him all things are better and for her all things are well. Parents: Zadok T. RIGGS and Jane "Jennie" LEIB.
