Jim Powell, son of David Humphreys and Marion Wooldridge Powell, was born April 4, 1922, in Kansas City, MO, and lived in Sedalia his first ten years. He was a descendant of General David Thomson, and other Pettis County pioneer families, the Wooldridges and the Powells. He lived for two years in Webster Groves, MO, where he attended the John Burroughs School, before moving to Kansas City, in 1935. He attended Pembroke Country Day School and gradauted from the Lawrenceville School in Lawrenceville, NJ. In 1941, he entered Yale University, where he roomed with his boyhood friend from Sedalia, the late Al Bohling, longtime editorial writer at the Kansas City Star. His college career was interrupted by World War II and he served in the U.S. Army 1943-44. He was honorably discharged after a 14-month hospitalization for a serious hip injury suffered in a training accident, which left him permanently and increasingly disabled. He returned to Yale and graduated in 1946. He joined City Bond and Mortgage Co., in Kansas City in 1947 and was Vice-President and Secretary of the firm when he took early retirement in 1975. During hi tenure at City Bond he was an instructor for a graduate course on urban development at UMKC and for seminars conducted across the nation for the Mortgage Bankers Association of America. He was a member of the Technical Advisory Board of MidAmerica Regional Council and received a certificate of appreciation from the Black Economic Union for assisting minority contractors. From 1979-82, he served as the Mortgage and Real Estate Manager of the William Rockhill Nelson Trust. he served from 1978-82 as a director of the Johnson County National Bank and Trust Co., Prairie Village, KS.
In a long career of community service, Jim Powell served as board member and president of the local Council on World Affairs, the English-Speaking Union, the Friends of the Library at UMKC and the Yale Club of Kansas City. In the 1950's he was associated with Carolyn Benton Cockefair in promoting the Great Books program in Kansas City and later served on the Cockefair Chair Advisory Committee at UMKC. He served on the board of the University Associates of UMKC and was a former trustee of St. Paul's Episcopal Day School. In 1971, he joined the citizens commission appointed by the Board of Education to make recommendations for the future of the Kansas City Public Library.
After his retirement he wrote "Edgewood, The Story of a Family and Their House," a record of his Virginia-Kentucky-Missouri ancestors, which was widely praised in genealogical circles. Until his death, he continued to be consulted by others across the country who were researching their own connections to his family tree. He was an avid student and collector of Mark Twain's works and in 1983-84 he presented a series of Mark Twain commentaries on KCUR-FM.
He was a member of the River Club, the Kansas City Country Club, and a former member of the Rockhill Tennis Club.
In 1960, he married Mary Jo Manry of Kansas City, MO. His daughter, Mary Wooldridge Powell, died of cystic fibrosis at the age of 25 in 1989. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, David Thorton Manry Powell and Lucinda Burlingame Powell, and two grandsons, Will and Alex. He is also survived by cousins, W. Geoffrey Powell, Atherton, CA; James R. Scaritt, Boulder, CO, his sister-in-law and husband, Janet Manry Altmann and Frank, Kansas City, MO; and two nephews, Dr. Reginald T. Bulkley, Springfield, IL, and Andred C. Bulkley, Deerfield Beach, FL.

Mr. Powell was born September 6th, 1818, at Graysville, Ohio. He married Miss Amelia Blair, of Ohio, September 4th, 1842. Mr. Powell while living in Ohio was engaged in the general merchandise business. He came west in 1860, to find a location in the New West, finally entering land in Sec. 22, Meridian Precinct. He did not return to Nebraska until the close of the war, in 1865, being accompanied by his family. The Powells made the trip overland, taking three months for the journey. The elder Powells continued to reside on the homestead until their demise. The father died March 18, 1885, the mother on November 2, 1885. Lazarus Whitehead Powell, III, 65, died unexpectedly Monday, October 31, 2005, in Charlottesville, in the presence of his family.
Born May 25, 1940, in Owensboro, Ky., he was the son of the late James Henry Powell II and Nancy Dixon Powell.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Randolph Toombs Powell and Wiley Dixon Powell.
He grew up in Peoria, Ill., and then attended the University of Virginia to study architecture and poetry, two of his lifelong interests. A printer by profession and a skilled graphic designer, he made his first career at the Charlottesville Free Press. For the past two decades, he was Building Manager of Newcomb Hallm the Student Union at the University of Virginia.
Known to many as Laz or Larry, he enjoyed contact with generations of students, staff and faculty. The cultural and intellectual environment of the University enriched his life.
He is survived by his three children, Emily Powell Koester and her husband, Robert, of Charlottesville, Martin Moseley Willoughby Powell of Charlottesville and Justin Jennings Walbridge Powell and his partner, Bernhard Ebbinghaus, of Mannheim, Germany, one brother, Robert Alves Powell of Vallejo, Calif.; a nephew, James Shartzer Powell of San Rafael, Calif.; a beloved granddaughter, Sylvia Powell Koester; and by his former wife, Angelika Schmiegelow Powell of Charlottesville.
Friends are invited to join the family for a memorial service at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 5, 2005, at St. Paul's Memorial Church on University Avenue. The Rev. Daniel Poist will officiate.

SOUTH BOSTON, Jan. 3--Mrs. Mary Powell Carter, 90, died today at a South Boston convalescent home. She was a member of the Olive Branch Methodist Church.
Survivors: five daughters, Mrs. Ruby C. Murray, Mrs. Louis C. Hendricks and Mrs. Alma C. Terry of Alton, Mrs. Willie C. Ruby C. Murray, Mrs. Lois C. Owen of Paces; four sons, Charlie E.
