Old Fall Fatal to Mrs. Duniway
Mrs. Ralph R. Duniway, 71, of 2216 E. Burnside street, a member of one of Portland's old families, died Wednesday night. Mrs. Duniway had been confined to Restwell sanitarium, Lake Oswego, for nearly a year and her health had been failing since she received a fractured hip in a fall four years ago. The injury had never healed properly.
Born Kate Schermerhorn in Rochester, N. Y., October 10, 1869, Mrs. Duniway spent most of her girlhood in Cleveland, O., reared by an aunt and uncle after the death of her parents.
She came to Portland in the early 1890s and for several years taught in local high schools and in the Allen Preparatory school.
The Duniways wer married here in 1894. They had met through mutual interests in Unitarian church activities. Mr. Duniway, one of Portland's best-known early-day citizens, died in 1920. The Duniway home on E. Burnside has been a landmark for years.
Mrs Duniway was one of the organizers of the Half Hour Study Club.
Survivors include a son, Robert E. Duniway, well known in the insurance business here; a daughter, Katherine Duniway, teacher at Milwaukie high school; two grandchildren, Ralph and Shirley Duniway; two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Willis Duniway and Mrs. Wilkie Duniway, both of Portland, and a brother-in-law, Dr. Clyde Duniway, eduator and lecturer and at present a member of the Stanford university faculty at Palo Alto, Cal.
The body is at the Killingsworth morturary. Funeral services will be announced Thursday. She was buried on 11 January 1941 in Portland, Multnomah, OR.

Donald 'Don' J. Schmalen
Funeral services for Donald "Don" J. Schmalen, 54, of Sheldon, who passed away on Monday, June 22, 2009, due to injuries received in an auto accidnt near Hartley, were held Thursday, June 25, 2009, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Sheldon. Fr Robert J. Schimmer officiated.
Burial took place at St. John's Catholic Cemetery at Emmetsburg, Iowa.
Donald "Don" John Schmalen, the son of John and Marjorie (Cunningham) Schmalen was born March 12, 1955 at Emmetsburg. He grew up on a farm near Ayrshire, where he attended Ayrshire schools and graduated from Ayrshire High School in 1973. Don furthered his education in Emmetsburg at the Iowa Lakes Farm Equipment Mechanics. After graduating from college, Don worked for Harms Implement in Everly, IA. He purchased a dairy farm in Perham, MN in 1981. On April 24, 1982, Don was united in marriage to Marilee Willms at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Spencer, IA. After their marriage, the couple made their home in Perham and in 1984, they returned to Everly and Don went back to work at Harms Implement. In 1994, Don and Marilee purchased the C&H Supply in sheldeon, which they owned and operated until 2006. Don drove a feed truck for Deluxe Feeds of Sheldon for a short while and in 2007, he became the Service Manager for Spencer International.
He was a member of the St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Sheldon, the Sheldon Knights of columbus #1564.
He was preceded in death by his father, John Schmalen, who was killed in an auto accident on the same day that Don was born, his father-in-law, Howard Willms; and two uncles, Robert and Marvin Cunningham.
Don is survived by his wife, Marilee of Sheldon, and their three children, Annette "Annie" and her husband, Chris Welday-Zimney of Houston, Texas; Nicholas "Nick" and his wife, Jessica Schmalen of Spirit Lake, and Michael "Mike" Schmalen of Sheldon; his mother, Marjorie Schmalen of emmetsburg, two sisters, Darlene and her husband, Robert Thilges of West Bend, Mary and her husband, Mike Peck of Colorado Springs, Colo; his mother-in-law, Marge Willms and her husband Victor Scholten of Sheldon, and a sister-in-law, Susan and her husband, Bob Maxson of Concordia, Kan.
