Joel Franklin SHORT Sr. was born about 1750 in , Chesterfield, VA. He died before 1 June 1830 at the age of 80 in , Jackson, TN. information from "A Tribute to Raymond D. and Docia E. McAlpin Short" 2009, by James Short, Tampa, FL "On November 28, 1771, Joel Short purchased 100 acres from his uncle, William Short. This land was located on the north side of the Banister River, in Pittsylvania co VA. Joel and Lucyresided here and farmed this land for many years, at least 4, possibly 5, of their children were born here. In 1777, in Pittsylvania co VA, Joel Short took the "Oath of Allegiance." Also listed taking the "Oath" were Cornelius Short III, Francis Short, John Short, and William Short. On April 16, 1782, in Pittsylvania co VA, Deed Book 6, p298, Joel Short sold 39 acres of land on the north side of the Banister River for 1,000 pounds to his brother, Joshua Short, both of Pittsylvania co. On the 1782 Tax List for Pittsylvania co VA, Joel Short paid taxes for 70 acres and Joshua Short for 39 acres. Joel Short sold his 70 acres of land to John George on 13 Aug 1785, and his wife Lucy Short, released her dower right in the land. Joel and Lucy migrated to Lincoln co KY following the sale of their land in Pittsylvania co VA. On 17 August 1786 and 16 May 1787, Joel Short is mentioned in Court Order Book 3, pp 15 and 110, of Lincoln co KY. Joel Short and his family are listed on Lincoln co KY Tax Payer Lists for 1788, 1789, and 1790. On 19 May 1790, Joel Short served on a jury in Lincoln co KY, according to Court Order Book 3, p491. In the 1792 records, he is listed with 1 horse and 4 cattle. In the 1796 records, he is listed as Joel Short, Sr. for the first time. In December 1796, Garrard co KY was formed partly from Madison co. Joel Short and his sons were living in the Upper District of Garrard co - the part that was once Madison co east of a line that separated the waters of the Kentucky River (Paint Lick watershed) and the waters of Dix River. Joel Short, Sr. is listed in the Garrard County tax records for 1797, 1799 and 1800. In the 1801 Tax List for Garrard co KY, Joe Short with 4 horses and Joshua Short with 2 horses are listed; and in 1802 only Joshua Short is listed. Joel Short may have been exempt from paying any taxes in 1802 because he would have been over 50 years old. In late 1802 or early 1803, the Short Families migrated to Jackson co TN. Joel Short and Joshua Short are listed on the 1803 Tax List (but not on the 1802 Tax List) in Parsons District, believe to be the Brimstone Creek area of Jackson co TN.
