MEET SAMUEL RICHARD SHORE
The following appeared in Leo Jane Shore's book "The Frederick Shore Family" It had appeared in "The Oak Grove Banner" dated Friday, April 6, 1906:
Hale and Hearty at 85, Richard Shore Celebrates his 85th birthday Sunday. Was Born in North Carolina.
Very seldom indeed to men live to be octogenarians and still possess nearly, if not quite all, the faculties they had in their younger days. Yet this can be said of Samuel Richard Shore, who celebrated his 85th birthday Sunday, April 1, 1906, at the home of his daughtger, Mrs. S. F. Davis, 6 miles south of Oak Grove. A surprise dinner, which had almost the magnitude of a feast, was given in his honor, and seventy of his kin--children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. They all had a splendid time, but none enjoyed it more than the venerable Mr. Shore.
Mr. Shore was born in Stokes County, NC, where he spent his boyhood days. In November 1835, he came to Lafayette County, Missouri.
When Mr. Shore arrived in Lafayette, there was no established road except a trail from Lexington to Harrisonville. The Missouri River was the great artery of commerce, and Lexington was a noted shipping point for a large amount of territory which extended south to the Ozark Mountains. hemp was the chief product of Lafayette County, and it was cultivated by slave labor. The prairies of Lafayette and Jackson Counties were covered with herds of deer, wild turnkeys abounded in the woods, and wil honey could be found in almost every hollow tree.
Mr. Shore lived to see Western Missouri grow from a wilderness to a high state of civilization. Railroads have taken the place of the boats, and the weekly mail carried by stagecoach has been replaced with daily deliveries. Mr. Shore was married to Surrilda Parrent of Lafayette County on October 11, 1840. Eight sons and six daughters were born to the family.
Mr. Shore, a lifelong Democrat, cast his first vote for James K. Polk. He is a typical pioneer of Missouri, the like of which is rapidly passing away. The Banner has a tender place in its heart for the men and women wjho subdued the wilderness. Parents: Jonathan Wilhelm SHORE and Frances PHILLIPS.

Caleb SHORT was born about 1783 in , Pittsylvania, VA. He died on 17 March 1815 at the age of 32 in New Orleans, Orleans, LA. date from War of 1812 widow's pension application of Sarah Cherry Short. Information from "A Tribute to Raymond D. and Docia E. (McAlpine) Short," 2009, by James Short, Tampa FL
"Caleb Short, the son of Joel Franklin Short, Sr. and Lucilla "Lucy" Farris, was born about 1783 in Pittsylvania co VA. He married Sarah "Sally" Cherry on Thursday, 13 January 1814, in Jackson co TN. They were married by Parson Phillip Mulkey, brother of the well-known Pastor John Mulkey of Monroe co KY.
Sarah "Sally" Cherry was born about 1794 in Edgecombe co NC, and was the daughter of Lemuel Cherry and Sarah McPherson.
Caleb Short first appears in the still existing Jackson co TN records in the 1812 Tax List with his father, Joel Short, Sr. and his brothers, James, Joel Jr. and Joshua.
On 17 Oct 1812, Caleb acquired "...30 acres...Joel's Fork of Jenning Dr...on John Lee's east boundar..." Jackson co TN land records, Entry #s 9246 and 9247.
On surveys dated 2 Jun 1813, three land records are shwon as Entry #s 10844, 10845 and 10846: 1) "...30 acs...Joel's Cr of Jennings Cr...to incl Brown's old cabin...,"2) "...8 acs...Joel's Cr of Jennings Cr..to incl part of Joel Short's improvement...," and 3) "...Pine Lick Fork of Jennings Cr...on the road leading from Lock's Ferry to Glasgow..to incl James Pursley's improvement...,"
The Land Grant #5939 for the 30 acre tract referenced above was recorded in Nashville on 15 Aug 1814 in Book H, p. 340. And the Land Grant #10070 for the 8 acre tract was given in Knoxville on 27 May 1817 and recorded in Nashville on 7 Oct 1817 in Book "N", p 243. No Land Grant for the 3rd parcel has been found in the records in Nashville.
It is known that Caleb's brother, James Short, could read and write. It is believed that Caleb, also, could read and write. Henry West was the school teacher in a school house near Brimstone Creek in about 1810-1815, and maybe before 1810, but no records exist for that earlier date.
Tennessee play as prominent a role in the War of 1812 as any state in the union. Citizens of Tennessee greatly desired to defend the honor of the nation; and patriotism and a strong sense of national pride ran deep on the frontier. When Governor Blount called for volunteers, so many men came forward that Tennessee acquired the nickname of "The Volunteer State."
Caleb Short joined the Tennessee Militia, as did William Plumlee, Corporal Elisha Short, Private Archibald Plumlee and Private Cary Cherry. Caleb Short was elected 2nd Lt and William Plumlee was elected 3rd Lt in the Tennessee Militia (Infantry) under the command of Captain Henry West, Third Regiment, under Colonel James Raulston. The election of Caleb Short to 2nd Lt. implies a high level of popularity and confidence in him by the men of the Militia from Jackson co TN.
The Company was formed at the mouth of the Roaring River in Jackson co TN on 13 Nov 1814 and arrived at Camp Hynes near Nashville on 21 Nov 1814. Today the exact location of Camp Hynes is unknown. Camp Hynes was the rendezvous point for transport to New Orleans. They were mustered in on 23 Nov 1814 and left for New Orleans on 24 Nov 1814. The troops made their way down the Mississippi River and arrived near New Orleans after a journey of about one month. They participated in many skirmishes leading up to the Battle of New Orleans, on 7 and 8 January 1815. Captain Henry West's regiment was engaged in heavy action. In addition to battle casualties, many men died of disease in New Orleans and on their return to Tennessee.
According to the pension affidavit signed by Sarah Cherry Short, she stated that Caleb Short, her husband, went on a tour of duty to New Orleans and never returned. 2nd Lt Caleb Short died on 7 Mar 1815, in New Orleans, probably from a disease like yellow fever or malaria.
