Rylen B. Rudy, one of the best known citizens of Neosho county, died at this new home three miles north of Neosho on the Joplin road on Thursday, November 2, at 3:40. His death was not a surprise as Mr. Rudy had been in poor health for over a year and it has been known for several months that he could not live long. More than a year ago he had a long sick spell from liver and kidney trouble. Soon after he got up he was taken to the Battle Creek Sanatariu for an operation. The physicians there gave him no hope for recovery but after coming back home he got better an d resumed business affairs. He built a fine new home on the Rudy place north of town which he had bought and moved there last spring. He engaged in farming and the out-door live seemed to agree with him. A change for the worse came several weeks ago but he was conscious until just a few days before he died.
Rylen Barnett Rudy was born Feby. 24, 1861, at Tolona, Ill. He came to Neosho when 19 years old and lived her nearly all the balance of his life. He was a cigar maker by trade and worked at that business for many years. He was also a merchant but for the past 12 or 15 years has been engaged mostly in the real estate business. Mr. Rudy was married Feby. 26, 1883 to Miss Ada B. Campbell of Neosho, daughter of the late W. H. Campbell, who is living and they have seven children: Earl R., Frank O. and Steele; Mrs. Diva Barlow, Misses Viola, Lola and Fletah. There is also one brother, Perlonzo O. Rudy, who lives in California.
Mr. Rudy was one of Neosho's most active and public spirited business men. He was connected with many institutions and had varied financial interests. He owned man farms and also considerable town property both here and in other places. He was probably among the largest real estate owners in the county and one of the largest tax-payers. He was a shrewd and successful business man and was often placed in charge of enterprises of a public character He was one of the road commissioners of this special road district and did much to forward the good road pavement. He was a man of cordial disposition, friendly with the poor as well as with people of his own station and had as many friends probably as any man in the county.
The funeral services were held at the residence Saturday afternoon at 2:00. They were conducted by Rev. S. L. Combs of the Presbyterian church of which Mr. Rudy was a member and he was assisted by Rev. N. A. Wood of Joplin who was an old friend of the family and knew Mr. Rudy intimately. It was a very large funeral and friends came many miles to pay their last respects. More than a hundred automobiles lined the road in front of the residence and followed the hearse to the cemetery. It was a fine tribute to the life of a highly respected citizen. He was buried on 4 November 1916 at I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Neosho, Newton, MO. Parents: Perlonzo Conduit RUDY and Virginia E. BARNETT.
