He died on 4 November 1931 at the age of 64 in Sedalia, Pettis, MO. obituary, The Jefferson City Post-Tribune, Wednesday, November 4, 1931, front page SHOOTING FATAL TO COL. POWELL, SEDALIA BANKER President of the Citizens National Succumbs At Noon Today FAMILY MAINTAINS IT WAS ACCIDENT Efforts of Noted Brain Surgeon To Save His Life Are Futile Seaalia, MO, Nov. 4--(AP) Col. William H. Powell, president of the Citizens' National Bank of Sedalia, who shot himself in the head at his home Sunday in what members of his family said was an accident, died at noon today. The bank has been closed for checking and a national bank examiner is in charge. The president of the bank, which had approximately, $2,500,000 deposits, shot himself Sunday afternoon in an upper room in his home after Tim Moffitt, Negro chauffeur, had found him sitting in the Powell automobile in the garage at his home the motor running. Col. Powell did not drive, but members of his family said he had been anxious to learn and may have started the motor for experience. Powell had telephoned Moffitt to report at 4:15 p.m. and the chauffeur came 15 minutes early. He accompanied Col. Powell to the home and shortly heard the shot from the upstairs room where the bank president was alone. Dr. Walter B. Dandy, noted brain surgeon, who once carried a paper route for the Sedalia Democrat, of which Col. Powell was vice-president, performed a "decompression operation" on the banker Monday night, after hurrying to Sedalia. Dr. Dandy, a member of the staff at Johns Hopkins, was on a trip when he read of the shooting. Born in Pettis County April 14, 1867, Col. Powell was the son of the late William Harrison Powell, an organizer of the Citizens National Bank. Col. Powell attended rural and Sedalia schools until 17, when he began work as a clerk in the bank. He became cashier and was elected president in in 1913, succeeding W. T. Hutchinson, who died. Col. Powell was prominent in civic affairs and in earlier campaigns played a prominent part as a leading Democrat. He was a charter member of the Elks Club here, a Shriner and 32nd Degree Mason, and for 13 years was a member of the Sedalia Board of Education. His widow and two sons, William H. Powell of Albuquerque, New Mexico, and David H. Powell, Sedalia, a vice-president of the Citizens National Bank, survive. No formal arrangements have been made. The Purple and Gold, The Journal of Chi Psi Fraternity, From Summer 2006 volume 124, #3, The CORNELL FIRE, 6 and 7 December 1906, "Ray R. Powers, Psi '07, from Atlanta Georgia was severely injured. he was sleeping in a room with three other seniors .........and was the first to awaken. Powers, as soon as he was out of bed, shouted for the others to follow him. He sustained severe burns attempting to escape down the hall, but he returned to the room and saw his three roommates to safel. He escaped himself by sliding down a rope, then started to place a ladder on another side of the house, but found that he was unable to hold it. From the accounts of others, it seems that while all this was transpiring, Powers' skin was hanging from his face and from the tis of his fingers in strips, and his entire forearm had been peeled bare. Without assistance he walked to the Phi Kappa Psi house nearby. When the physicians came to him, he told them to leave him and to help someone else who was more severely hurt." Four members of the fraternity and three volunteer fire fighters died. "Selling Modernity: Advertising in Twentieth-Century German" by Pamela E. Swett, S. Jonathan Wiesen, Jonathan R. Zatlin, p153, Duke University Press, September 2007, "In April 1929, when Coca-Cola was first produced in Germany, there was no reason to doubt that it was an "American" product. Beck in the United States, then under Prohibition, Coke easily calimed the title of "the national drink"; Canada Dry Ginger Ale, its nearest competitor at the time, sold only one-third as much. Moreover, the expatriate behind the new German bottling franchise, Ray Rivington Powers, with his commanding bulk, flashy car, expensive clothes, and loud jovial personality, fully embodied the local stereotype of a "true American." However, despite his remarkable talents as a salesman, Powers alone did not establish Coca-Cola in Germany".... 1910 census, Precinct 25, Panama, Washington, FL, p23A, ED 123, T624_169, Harrison Ave 483/495 Ray R. He was buried in Smithfield, Tarrant, TX. www.rootsweb.com/~txtarran/places/smithfield1.htm Exerpted from "A History of Smithfield Church of Christ North Richland Hills, Texas" compiled and submited by Michael E. Patterson, Colleyville, TX Community oldtimer Philip A. White (b. 1912) recalled in an interview on August 15, 2000, that his mother attended the Smithfield church from time to time as a girl. She was born in 1880. Mr. White recalls that his mother's brother, James H. Prather (1872-1932), his wife, Betty (1874-1961) and their daughters were active in the church in the 1920s and before. Mr. Prather stopped attending church a few years before his death, but his daughters continued to be active and taught Sunday School classes before they married and started families of their own. The daughters were, ir order from oldest to youngest, Eura, Nina, Helen, and Opal. Mr. Prather's paternal grandfather, Jeremiah Prather (1803-1859), was a pioneer gospel preacher in Tarrant County, having arrived from Adair County, Missouri in November, 1857. Jeremaih Prather was probably a member of Tarrant County's first church of Christ congregation, which was established at Birdville on February 26, 1852. While Mr. White only attended a few services at Smithfield around 1928, he was in almost constant contact with his uncle, James H. Prather, and heard from him several items of church news Note #25 The Gospel Advocate Vol. VI, no. 3 (March, 1860) p. 96 Texas Confederate Pension Application Files, Jonathan T. Prather's application no. 2129. The Prather family was well-intrenched in northeast Tarrant County by the time the Smithfield church was established. Jeremaih Prather (Sept 14, 1803-Oct. 23, 1859) arrived in northeast Tarrant County in November, 1857 and settled at Birdville. They probably attended worship services at Birdville when they first arrived, but after the Bedord church was established in 1874, several later members of the family attended church there. James H. Prather and his family attended the Smithfield church because of their home's nearness to it. Note #26 Carol Elder, "Birdville Church of Christ," privately printed manuscript, (Ft. Worth, Texas: Nov. 1978). This paper was presented as an application for a Texas Historical Marker to the State Historical Commission. It was accepted and the marker was subeequently granted. Lipscomb: it is a painful duty devolving on me to inform yo and the readers of your excellent Advocate, of the death of our much beloved brother, Eld. Jeremiah Prather, who departed this life at his residence in this county, in the full confidence of a blessed immortality, on the 23d of October, 1859. Bro. Prather was born in Kentucky on the 14th of September, 1803. he has been a member of the Christian church for 30 years, and a zealous proclaimer of the ancient order of things for near twenty-two years. He has resided in Texas only two years, during which time he has secured the confidence and friendship of all that were capable of appreciating a truly good man. He leaves a widown and several children, and numerous friends to mourn their loss. May we be faithful to the end, and receive our reward with him in a better and happier world, is my prayer. He was buried in Beford Cemetery, Tarrant, TX. www.rootsweb.com/~txtarran/cemetery/bedford2.htm Jonathan Taylor Prather was born Mary 17, 1847 in Adair county, Missouri. He arrived in northeast Tarrant County with his parents and bilsings on November 7, 1857. He was the son of a church of Christ evangelist, Jeremiah Prather, who died on October 23, 1859 in nearby Birdville and lies buried there. Jonathan enlisted in the Confederate Army in Tarrant County in May 1862 and served until his company was discharged in 1865. He told pension application officials he served in Company F, Waller's Battallion, Walker's Divison, Lane and Tom Green's Brigade of Texas Cavalry. His captain was Jo. Terrell. He stated that he served his entire enlistment in the same command. He remembered that his discharge came at Bryan Station in Brazos County, Texas, on the Houston Central Railway in May, 1865, at which time his company disbanded. This was the company in which Frank Elliston was a Lieutenant. Jonthan Prather and his wife, S. Ellen, were married in Tarrant County on July 4, 1875. At the ttime she applied for her pension on Sept. 12, 1923, she stated she was 72 years, a native of Missouri, and had lived in Texas for sixty-four years. She said she had lived in Tarrant County for the last sixty years; hence she came to Tarrant county about 1863. Jonathan and his wife, S. Ellen Prather, appear in the 1900 Census of Tarrant County. He told the census taker that both his parents were born in Illinois. Ellen said she was born in August 1851 in Missouri, to a Kentuckian father and a Missourian mother. She also told the census taker she and Johnathan had been married twenty-four years, and that she had given birth to two children, both of whom were no longer alive in 1900. There are readable tomstones for the two children in Bedord Cemetery. One is William C. Prather, who was born May 29, 1877 and died February 2, 1880. The other is for Jeremiah D. Prather, who was born May 10, 1886 and died January 2, 1892. If the information Ellen Prather gave the census taker in 1900 is correct, Johnathan and Ellen Prather obviously have no living descendants. On September 1, 1909, Jonathan applied to the State of Texas for a pension based upon his service in the Confederate Army. At the time, his post office address was Smithfield. He filed the necessary paperwork, but had no further word from the state. On November 23, 1912, he reapplied. At the time, he was living in Fort Worth at 2141 Main Street. Jonathan T. Prather died at his home at Smithfield on August 20, 1923. His doctor, Henry Clay Gilbert, certified that his death was caughed by a "full......" His body was prepared for burial the same day by R. L. Lucas, an undertaker in Fort Worth. Jonathan was buried in Bedford Cemetery. After his death, Ellen Prather applied for and was granted a Confederate widow's pension from the State of Texas. She died of a brain hemorrhage while living at the Tarrant County Poor Farm, near Fort Worth, Texas, on February 5, 1928. Undertaker W. C. Lucas of Grapevine was in charge of her funeral arrangements, and she was buried at Bedford Cemetery. Since she had no living descendants, her Confederate widow's burial benefit was paid to her friend, R. L. Lucas of Fort Worth. Parents: Jeremiah David PRATHER and Sarah Allen MURPHY.
