S. Bryant Ott, a veteran thoroughbred racehorse trainer and owner, died Monday in Hialeah, Fla. He was 86. Ott, who was born just a block from Churchill Downs, began his career in 1911, first as an exercise boy and then as a jockey. His riding days ended after just two years when his mother became concerned about his dieting to keep his weight down. After serving in World War I, Ott became a stable foreman for Bashford Manor Stud. He began training horses in 1926. Among stables for which he trained were those owned by newspaper magnates John S. Knight, publisher-editor of The Miami Herald, and Marshall Field, Jr., who owned The Chicago Sun-Times. Top horses trained by Ott included Editorialist, Journalist, Copy Chief and Times Roman. Survivors include a daughter, Alice J. Dodson of Hialeah, and three grandchildren. The funeral will be tomorrow at Vista Funeral Home in Hialeah, with burial there.
