Data received from Joyce Willhoit:
Notes for Rev. Peter Terry Murphy: Civil War: Enlisted at age 22 in Company E of the 6th Enrolled Missouri Militia. The regiment saw service in Arkansas, Alabama, Kansas and Missouri. He was promoted to sergeant, hospitalized for a severe rupture in his left side caused when his horse stumbled while carrying a heavy load of arms and ammunition, and shot in his right heel with his own gun while serving as a military policeman. In Apr 1865, Peter and Martha moved to Bethan (Harrison County) where his parents lived. Twenty years later (1885) they moved to Ozark County with seven of the children. There they operated a general store in Almartha. He was postmaster at Almartha, 1899-1907. He was elected Judge of the Western District of Ozark County, 1903-1905; and also served as justice of the peace and as an elder in the Church of Christ. He was granted a pension. Three months befre his death, he wrote a letter to the Commission of Pensions in Washington, D. C., dated 5 Mar 1915 in Almartha, MO: "Dear Sir: I am now drawing a pension of $25 per month. I am 75 yr old today. Am I not allowed an increase under the age bill? Also how must I proceed in order to have it arranged so my wife can get a pension at my death without having to wait a year or so to have it allowed? Very Respectfully, Peter T. Murphy." This letter was found in his pension records on file at the National Archives. Peter did received a $5 monthly increase but his wife was not spared the red-tape. Peter and Martha both died of heart disease.
