S. O. Nelson Passes At 93
Samuel Oats Nelson, 93, who has been a resident of Decatur for 69 years, died this morning at 1:15 at Decatur General Hospital following a several weeks illness.
He came to Decatur from Lawrence County in 1888 and was employed by L. and N. Railroad for 33 years. He opened a grocery store in 1923 and this store is operated today as S. O. Nelson and Son, 6th St., SE.
Funeral services are to be Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. W. W. Coffey and the Rev. A. B. Van Arsdale officiating.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Samuel Oats Nelson; three sons, R. E. Nelson, Turlock, Calif., S. O. Nelson Jr., Danville, Ill., Hansford Nelson, Decatur; two daughters, Mrs. Eula Kaneipp, Mt. Carmel, Ill., Mrs. Marcie Bethany, Decatur; 11 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; one brother, Steve Nelson, Huntsville; and a number of other relatives.
Interment in City Cemetery is to be directed by Brown Funeral Co. Pallbearers will be Grady Young, Edward Norwood, Billy Nelson, J. T. Owens, Charles Holesapple, and J. W. Chandler. LITCHFIELD--Clarence Arthur Newcom, 85, of Litchfield died Thursday Nov. 18, 2004, at Heritage Manor in Litchfield.
He was boern Dec. 5, 1918, in Pocahontas, the son of Arthur Bell and Anna Maria Louise Boetto Newcom. He married Dorothy Delores Bates Euell in 1968 in Shelbyville, Tenn.
Mr. Newcom was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of World War II. He achieved the rank of corporal and received the Purple Heart. He was a coal miner with Little Dog Coal in Gillespie and worked for Granite City Steel Co. before retirement.

John O. Newcom, 75, of 810 Canterbury Road, Owensboro, formerly of Masonville, died Saturday, Jan. 31, 1999, at Owensboro Mercy Health System. He was born in Owensboro and retired as an electrician from Dyna Electric. He was a member of International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 1701 and was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Katherine Samples Newcom, two sons, Joel Thomas Gordon of Philpot and David Wagne Bigger of Utica; a brother, Archie Ray Newcom of Owensboro; a sister, Thelma Thurman of Owensboro, and several nephews and nieces.
Services are at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at James H. Davis Funeral Home Chapel in Owensboro. Burial will be in Owensboro Memorial Gardens. Visitation is from 2 to 8 p.m today and after 10 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
