Mrs. Ella Montgomery Barnhill, 81, died at 10 p.m. Monday at her home on Princeton street, following a heart attack suffered nearly four hours earlier. Although she had been very ill on several occasions in recent years, Mrs. Barnhill was active on the day of her death, and the end was unexpected.
The daughter of Thomas G. and Martha Hunter Montgomery, Mrs. Barnhill was a descendant of one of the pioneer families of this section, was born Jan. 19, 1860, two miles south of Providence, and had spent her entire life in and near Providence. On Dec. 29, 1880 she was married to John H. Barnhill, also a member of a pioneer family, and whose father, John D. Barnhill contributed the land where the First Baptist church now stands. Her husband died Jan. 15, 1928. Mr. and Mrs. Barnhill moved from their farm to the home on Princeton street in 1912 and she had lived there since that time. Her youngest daughter, Mrs. Roy Allen, Mr. Allen, and their daughter, Louise, also are occupants of the home. Mrs. Barnhill had been a member of the First Baptist church for sixty-eight years, a longer time than any other member. She was a devout Christian, actively interested in the work of her church. Through the years she had drawn to her an increasingly large circle of friends in all walks of life, all of whom loved her devotedly and were loved by her. Her mind was alert until the last and her keen memory was unimparied in any way by advancing age. She was considered an authority on the history of this section, and compiled numerous scrapbooks, which have proved to be of inestimable value to those requiring information regarding past events. Even in times of painful illness, she never lost her unfailing good humor and extreme kindness.
Survivors are four sons, T. K., J. C. , and Leslie Barnhill, Providence, and William Barnhill, Tulsa, Okla; four daughters, Mrs. C. S. Loyons and Mrs. S. T. Harrison, Madisonville, Mrs. R. R. Rogers, Nebo, and Mrs. Roy Allen, Providence; fifteen grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a brother, Judge T. J. Montgomery, Providence. A son, Owen Barnhill, died Jan. 23, 1918.
Funeral services were held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist church with the pastor, the Rev. Benjamin Connaway officiating. Serving as pallbearers were grandsons, J. C. Lyons, Joe B. Rogers, Gene, Tommy, Robert and James Cloyd Barnhill, Virgil Ivy, and Marcus Cowel. Granddaughters and nieces assisted with the flowers. Burial was in Big Hill Cemetery.

Erroll H. Montgomery, 50, died at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at his home on Harmon street, as the result of a heart attack. He was stricken at 9:30 Saturday morning, and his condition remained grave throughout the day. Death came after he had been removed to a cot in order that he might be taken by ambulance to a hospital. Mr. Montgomery, the son of Mr. and Mrs. S. E. Montgomery, was born in Providence on Aug. 28, 1892, in the home in which his mother still lives. He attended school here and received business training at Bowling Green Business University. He was in the Army during World War I, and served overseas for thirteen months with the 322nd Field Artillery. He later affiliated with the local Americna Legion post and one served as adjutant. He was interested in the development of the community, and was a popular member of the city council in the years 1936 and 1937. Mr. Montgomery was an ardent sportsman, and especially enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was a member of the Crab Orchard Rod and Gun Club, and in 1940 served as a director of the Kentucky League of Sportsmen. For a number of years he was associated with his father in the operation of the funeral directors' firm of S. E. Montgomery and Son, and following the death of his father in January 1932, he assumed management of the business. Possessed of a genial disposition, kindness, cheerfulness and patience, Mr. Montgomery mad and retained friends wherever he went. The shock of his sudden passing saddened the entire community. He died in October 1797 at the age of 76 in ,Woodford, KY. data on Samuel and his children come from the book by David Trimble, Southwest Virginia Families, p. 285-288. He came to America with his parents about 1733, settling in Lancaster county, PA. In 1746, he moved to Augusta (now Botetourt) Co VA. On March 9, 1770, he bought land in Botetourt (now Wythe) Co VA. He sold the land on 1 Aug 1789 and moved to Woodford (now Franklin) Co. KY. He made his will on 1 Jun 1797 and the estate was admitted for probate on 1 Nov 1797.
"History of Woodford County" by William Edward Railey, p301
Samuel Montgomery settled in Woodford county about 1784. The maiden name of his wife is not known to any one with whom I have communicated, but it is know that he was the father of nine children, six sons and three daughters. His eldest son, Robert, served in the Revolution and received many wounds inflicted by both gun and sabre, at Guilford's Court House, but he survived them all and reared a large family of children, the late H. P. Montgomery, a lawyer of Georgetown, being a grandson.
Another son was John Montgomery, who moved to Franklin County and settled on "Big Benson" in 1794. His wife was ____Thomas, and they had a son Samuel. John Montgomery and his family moved to Hopkins County in 1810. He served in the Indian wars and was wounded on the Wabash. If I am correctly informed, they also had a son John, who married Linda Parker whose daughter Rose Lee Montgomery married N. B. Hays, who was Attorney General during the incumbency of Gov. Beckham, and afterwards sought the Gubernatorial nomination.
Another son of pioneer Samuel Montgomery was James Montgomery, who accompanied the Lewis-Clark expedition across the continent to the Pacific coast in 1805.
(This sketch is full of inaccuracies, among them the last paragraph, James Montgomery was a LT with George Rogers Clark's Kaskaskia expedtion and drowned in the Mississippi River. He was deceased long before Lewis & Clark headed west-jek) Parents: James MONTGOMERY and Anne THOMSON.
Spouse: Margaret NICHOLS. Margaret NICHOLS and Samuel MONTGOMERY were married about 1748 in , Augusta, VA. Margaret and Samuel's marriage date is a guess based on the approximate ages of their children, found in printed materials on the family, particularly those of Dr. David Trimble: "Some Southwest Virginia Families and "Montgomery and James." It is possible they married in Lancaster co PA, but neither location for their marriage is provable. Children were: Elizabeth MONTGOMERY, Mary MONTGOMERY, James MONTGOMERY, William MONTGOMERY, Samuel MONTGOMERY, Robert C. MONTGOMERY, Nancy MONTGOMERY, Joseph MONTGOMERY, John MONTGOMERY.
