Charles Murphy, caretaker of the Baptist temple for the last eight years, died at St. John's hospital early today after a short illness. He was in his sixty-seventh year.
The Rev. W. E. Van Patten, pastor of Trinity Methodist church, assisted by the Rev. J. H. Sowerby, of the Baptist church, will conduct the funeral at the church tomorrow at 2:00 p. Burial is to be made in Highland cemetery.
Mr. Murphy was born in Illinois. Mr. and Mrs. Murphy, who survives him, came to Iola from Cherryvale 20 years ago and have lived here ever since. He is also suvived by Mrs. Elsie Patterson and Floyd Murphy, children, both of whom live in Wichita. He had seven grandchildren.

Clara was an amazing woman, she loved life each day to its very fullest.

HOPE--Mr. Deal Ellis Murphy, 91 of Hope passed away, Monday, Jul 30 in Arkadelphia, Arkansas. Mr. Murphy was born August 24, 1920 in Wallace, Arkansas to Edward Ellis and Hazel Gray Murphy. He was the owner/operator of Dean's Enterprises, a devoted Christian, a faithful, loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. he is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Bobbye Shelton Murphy, brothers, Dale and John D. Murphy and sister, Patsy Jackson.
Mr. Murphy is a veteran of World War II, serving with the 3701t Army Air Force Bomb Unit based in Amarillo, Texas. H never lost his love for his country, his freedom and remained active in politics his entire life. He had served as Commander of Leslie Huddleston Post #12 at Hope, Commander of Louis Pierce Post at Foreman and District commander of District 12. He is a member of the American Legion and had served ten years with the Department of Arkansas American Legion Policy and Legislative.
He had served as Circuit Clerk and Chancery Clerk of Little River County, arkansas. He was a Member of the First Baptist Church of Hope, where he has served as a Sunday School Teacher, President of the Baptist's Men's organization and a Deacon. He was a board member of the Conway Baptist College and a board member of the Baptist Foundation of America. He was a member of the Whitfield Masonic Lodge #239 in Hope, past Master of the Rocky Comfort Lodge #468 in Foreman. He was a York Rite 32nd Mason and Scottish Rite 32nd Mason and Shriner. He was a member of the Hope and Foreman Eastern Star and served as Worthy Patron of both lodges. He had chaired Heart Fund, Easter Seals, Red Cross and March of Dimes of Hempstead County, was a Commissioner of the Caddo Council, Boy Scouts of America. He has served as President of the Hope Kiwanis Club, with membership since 1959. He has served as a representative of Kiwanis International, served as Governor of the Missouri-Arkansas Divison of Kiwanis Internation; 1973-1974. Mr Murphy has served on the Arkansas Parks and Tourist a a member and a Chairman. He was the organizer of the Hope Tourist Promotion Commission. He and his wife led in the organization of the "Melon City Sams" and attended many state and national Samborees.
Mr. Murphy is survived by one son; Michael Dean Murphy of Hope, daughter, Patti Frazier of Little Rock; two grandchildren, Marcus Shane Murphy and wife, Jennifer and Bridgett Bree Murphy all of Hope; two great-granddaughters, Jordyn Grace Murphy and Emma Kate Murphy, all of Hope; sister-in-law, Helen Murphy of Fayetteville; brother-in-law, T. James "Jim" Murphy, 74, of West Frankfort passed away at 9:15 a.m. Monday, June 29, 2009 at Memorial Hospital in Carbondale. he was born June 1, 1935 in West Frankfort to Lincoln Murphy and Jennie (Herrell) Murphy. He married Phyllis June (Marks) Murphy on December 2, 1952. Survivors include his wife, June Murphy of West Frankfort; sons, Greg and wife, Karmel Murphy, and Gary and wife, Becky Murphy of West Frankfort; a daughter, Linda and husband, Mike Neely of Carterville; grandchildren, Jami and Tara Moore, Randy, Luke, Jake, Heather and Stacey Murphy; great-grandchildren, Drew and Dyland Moore and Clayton and Graham Murphy; sisters, Emma and husband Ernie Lira of Huntley, IL, and Debbie and husband, Lee Dodd of West Frankfort; brothers, Woodrow and wife, Mary Murphy of Pierron, IL., and Larry and wife, Donna Murphy of Newburgh, Ind.; sisters-in-law, Edna and husband, Donald Orr and Mildred Marks all of West Frankfort. He was preceded in death by his parents. Jim was a member of the I.B.E.W. Local #702 of West Frankfort for 43 years and owned and operated Murphy Electric. He was awarded a Kentucky Colonel, President of the Kentucky Travelers Motorcycle Club. He was an avid motorcycle rider, enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling, boating and enjoyed his retirement home in Florida in the winters. He also enjoyed morning coffee with the guys. Funeral services will be Thursday, July 2, 2009 at 11 a.m. At the Parker-Reedy Funeral Home in West Frankfort with Brother Mike Orr officiating. Burial will be in the East Fork Cemetery in West Frankfort. Friends may call from 5 p.m to 8 p.m. Wednesday to the funeral home.
