William Harvey Barlow, 58, retired director and vice president of research and chemicals for Marathon Oil company, died at 10:15 a.m. yesterday at Blanchard Valley Hospital.
Mr. Barlow joined Marathon in 1942 as a petroleum engineer at Tulsa, Okla., and worked with the organization until his health forced him to retire Feb. 4, 1969.
Born October 11, 1910 in Neosho, MO, he was the son of John T. and Diva (Rudy) Barlow and his mother survives there. On Dec. 20, 1937 he married Edna Lough who survives -- with a son, Michael H., affiliated with Marathon in Dayton.
Surviving brothers and sisters are: John R., N ew Orleans, La., Mrs. Robert (Lucille) Parks, Texas City, Tex., and Mrs. Kenneth (Virginia) Howard, Fort Worth, Tex.
Mr. Barlow graduated from the University of Oklahoma in 1932 with a degree in petroleum engineering. he was employed as an oil company roustabout and petroleum engineer for four years and from 1936 to 1942 served as a petroleum engineer in the U. S. Bureau of Mines.
He then joined Marathon and moved to Findlay in 1945 to become part of the staff of the chief petroleum engineer. He was made assistant chief petroleum engineer in 1952. In 1954, Mr. Barlow was named manager of the newly created research department and was responsible for selection of Marathon's original professional research staff.
Five years later he was elected to the Board of Directors and in 1961 was elected vice president. At that time his organization was expanded into chemical development and sales and his responsibilities were further broadened with the addition of the operation research division in 1962 and commercial development division in 1967.
Mr. Barlow was a 23-year member of the First Presbyterian Church. He was a member of the Tau Beta Phi and Sigma Tau honorary engineering fraternities and Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. While living in Findlay, he became a director of the Ohio Chamber of Commerce, a trustee and past president of the Community Improvement Corporation of the Findlay Area Chamber of Commerce, and a member of the executive board fothe Put-Han-Sen Council Boy Scouts of America. He also was a member of the Findlay Rotary Club and the Findlay Country Club.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church, the Rev. G. Terry Bard officiating. Private committal services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Memorial Park Cemetery, Bartlesville, Okla. Friends may call at the Kirkpatrick-Hawkins Funeral Home, Lima Ave., from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today. The casket will remain closed.
