Helen Bette METCALF was born on 25 September 1925 in Kalispell, Flathead, MT. She died on 13 January 2009 at the age of 83 in Fairbanks, Fairbanks North Star, AK. www.legacy.com, obituary, The Fairbanks, AK, Daily News-Miner, January 18, 2009
Helen Bette Day passed on to be our Lord and her family on Jan. 13, 2009.
She was born in Kalispell, Mont., on Sept. 25, 1925, to Virgil Preston Metcalf and Susan Agnes McGregor. She was raised and attended schools in Flathead Valley, Kalispell, Mont.
On Dec. 12. 1943, Bette married James R. Day in Salinas, Calif., where he was stationed in World War II. Jim also was from Kalispell.
After the war, in the spring of 1947, their adventure to Alaska began. Jim drove to Alaska on the Alaska Highway, and Bette followed him by airplane. They resided at the famous Cheechako Hotel with many of our futre family friends. Their love for Alaska remained for the rest of their lives.
Bette and Jim had four children: Le Ann, Dianne, Jo Ann and Mike. They homesteaded at 7 Mile Chena Hot Springs Road and moved there in the home they built in 1962. They had a large farm that took lots of hard work and lots of love to raise their family. Bette loved to garden, bake bread and cook for her family and many friends that were always stopping by. she sewed her girls' clothes all through the years.
Most of all, she had a quick wit and so many old-fashioned sayings. She never met a stranger. Bette and Jim always were willing to lend a hand to anyone in need. She will be very much missed by her loved ones and friends. She always will be remembered for her humor and stories.
Bette was a member of the Alaska State chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and Pioneers of Alaska Igloo 8.
She is survived by her daughters and sons-inlaw, Dianne and Tim Altrock of Anchorage, Jo Ann and Doug Sweet of Fairbanks; and son, Mike Day of Fairbanks; five grandchildren: Shannon McGee and Scott McGee, Elizabeth Sweet and Patrick Sweet of Fairbanks and Kenny Sweet of Anchorage, two great-grandchildren, Anya Bette McGee and Daphne Nichole Sweet, both of Fairbanks, and her "honorary" son, Robert C. Carle of Anchorage.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James R. Day in 1993, daughter, Le Ann Doane in 2009; her parents, Virgil and Susan Metcalf, brother, Bernard Metcalf and sister, Gertrude Street.
Her memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 24, at Community Covenant Church, 2126 McCullam Ave. There will be a time of food and fellowship following the service.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Alzheimer's Society.
Condolences may be sent to the family at 570 Kentshire Drive, Fairbanks AK 99709.
