Herschel Delbert Barber, 83, of Port Orchard died March 15, 2002, in Port Orchard.
Mr. Barber was born Aug. 8, 1918, in Winnett, Mont. to Benjamin Clark and Bessie (Connoly) Barber. He married Florence Mae Bailey on April 23, 1943, in Bremerton.
He graduated from Winnett High School in 1936 and attended welder school.
Mr. Barber served in the Navy from July 1944 to February 1946, achieving the rank of shipfitter second class. He was awarded the World War II Victory Medal and Asiatic Pacific Ribbon.
He was a foreman/welder at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, retiring after 21 years.
Mr. Barber volunteered at the Bremerton Naval Museum and took five mile walks around Bremerton daily. He was active in the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. He was a Protestant.
He is survived by his wife of Bremerton; a daughter, Celia Kirkland and her husband, Richard, of Pottsboro, Texas; a sister, Alberta Kamsack of Great Falls, Mont.; three grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Evelyn Beerman and Ina Comstock.
Visitation will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Lewis Chapel in Bremerton. The graveside service begins at 3 p.m. Tuesday in Lewis Chapel, and will be followed by military honors at the gravesite at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Bremerton. Arrangement are under the direction of Lewis Funeral Home Chapel in Bremerton.

The Rev. Carl Brenton Bare, of 3 Salmonet Terr., Middletown, retired pastor of the United Congregational Church and a former Navy chaplain, died yesteray in Newport hospital.
He took a prominent part in many civic activies in the city. He was a former president of the Newport Ministerial Union; former member of the YMCA board of directors; and a member of Redwood Library, Newport Discussion Club, Newport Rotary Club and other organizations.
He was born Oct. 28, 1988, inShahjahanpur, India, a son of the Rev. Charles L. Bare, a Methodist minister, and Mrs. Susan Winchell Bare.
Mr. Bare was graduated from Ohio Wesleyan in 1911 and from Union Theological Seminary in 1918. In 1916 he was sent by the YMCA to work with Indian troops in Mesopotamia. He was enlisted in 1918.
He was a chaplain aboard the USS Louisville in 1918 and 1919' assistant at the First Congregational Church of Montclair, N. J. 1919-1921; pastor of Union Church in San Juan, Puerto Rico, 1922-24; past of South Church in Concord, N. H., 1924-31; pastor of the Presbyterian Church in Rye, N. Y., 1931-37; and pastor of Thoburn Methodist Church in Calcutta, India, from 1937 until he came to Newport in 1940 to be interim pastor of the United Congregational Church. He remained there as pastor until his retirement in June, 1958.
His first wife, Mrs. Virginia McCarty Bare, died Aug. 7, 1959.
