Margaret Loring Jewell, age 96 years old. A gracious lady, our loving mother, died peacefully on March 19, 2011, after six days in Santa Rosa (CA) Memorial Hospital. Three of her children, Asa, Tisa, and Mary (her caregiver for the past nine years) were with her throughout those days. Margaret, first surviving daughter of Joshua and Emma Sladen Loring, was born in Springfield , MA, September 23, 1914. Her family moved to Natick, MA, where she graduated from Natick High School. In the mid-Twenties the family began spending summers in Drakes Island, Wells, ME. She married Asa H. Jewell of Lexington, KY, on April 15, 1937. They moved with their three young children to Franklin, TN, in 1942 where Asa joined his father and two brothers at Jewell Tobacco Warehouse. A fourth child was born in 1944. Our parents purchased the cottage next to our grandparents' cottage in Maine in 1946, and thereinafter we spent all our summers at Drakes Island. Above all mother exemplified kindness; she listened to people thus so many loved her. She was an artist all her life specializing in seascapes of her beloved Maine coast and portraits. She explored pottery, weaving, and many other art forms. She is predeceased by her beloved husband, Asa, mayor of Franklin from 1962-1969, who died in 1979 after 52 years of marriage, her parents and her two dear sisters.
