Deaths and Burials
The funeral of Dr. Charles A. Leas took place from the Eutaw Place Baptist Church shortly after noon yesterday. The remains, which were brough from Glyndon on the train which reach Baltimore about noon, were inclosed in a black cloth-covered casket, on wich lay the collar indicating Dr. Leas' rank in the Independent Order of Odd-Fellows, that of a past grand master. Members of his family and some of his friends accompanied the body from Glyndon. At Eutaw Place Baptist Church the services were conductged by the Rev. Drs. Frank M. Ellis and J. W. M. Williams. Prayer ws offered by both clergymen, and a funeral address was made by Rev. Dr. Ellis on the test: "For our light affiction, which is but for a moment, work to for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory." This expression of St. Paul, said Rev. Dr. Ellis, ws the rational and Christian stand-ppoint from which to look at our sorrows. The things of this world should not be regarded with indifference, but they should not be overused." The pallbearers were the officers of Harmony Lodge, No. 6, of the Order of Odd-Fellows--James H. Mages, John Mages, George Hopkins, James Gibbs, Dr. Erickson, Wm. C. Jones and Abel Brunner. The remains were placed temporarily in a vault at Greenmount Cemetery.

During the Crimean War, he went to Russia at the request of the Russian Minister to serve on the army's medical staff. For his service, he was knighted by Czar Alexander II with the Imperial Order of St. Stanislaus. After the war, President Buchanan appointed him U.S. consul to Russia. In subsequent years, he also served as American Consul to Sweden, Madeira, and British Honduras. Dr. Leas was also the founder of the community of Glyndon, in Baltimore co MD, which is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Benjamin Berry, LeCompte, Jr, 81, of Richmond, died at home on Friday, August 6, after a lengthy illness. He was the son of the late Isabel Collie LeCompte and Benjamin Berry LeCompte. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Carmen Pettus LeCompte. In addition to his wife, he is survived by four children, Benjamin Berry LeCompte III, his wife, Cathy and their children, Nichole, Michelle, Ashley, Barton, and Benjamin, Hunter Pettus LeCompte, his wife, Ellen and their sons, Hunter and Benjamin; Rebecca LeCompte Thorton, her husband,Leigh and their children, Carmen, Rebecca, and Grayson, and William Harvey LeCompte, his wife, Annette and their children, Olivia, William Isabel, and Christopher. In addition is is survived by a sister, Isabel LeCompte Schulte and a brother, Edwin Lee LeCompte. Mr. LeCompte attended VPI before going into the armed services during WWII. He was president of the family owned business, Bone Dry Fertilzer Company and was a member of St. Benedict's Catholic Church.
