Frank B. Lord, 78, newspaper-man and author, died yesterday at a nursing home here after an illness of several months.
Mr. Lord came to Washington in 1894 as secretary to the manager of the National Building & Loan Association. Subsequently he worked as a reporter for the Washington Times, and for the Washington bureau of the New York Sun, the New York Herald, and the Cincinnati Inquirer. He was one of the first recognized White House correspondents.
He was associated with the Democratic National Committee, either as an assistant to the chairman or in charge of publicity, during six national campaigns, starting in 1901.
An ardent bridge fan, Mr. Lord organized the first bridge tournament ever held in Washington and wrote on bridge for several newspapers. He also wrote a parody on the game, a book entitled "Rubaiyat of Bridge."
His other books included "The Story of Monticello," "The Story of the Nation's Capitol," and "Romantic Road to Mount Vernon."
He was a member and past president of the National Press Club.
Surviving is a daughter, Mrs. C. J. Carlstrand, of 8320 16th st., Silver Spring, Md., with whom Mr. Lord had been residing.
Funeral services will be held 4 p.m Monday at the Hines funeral home, 2901 14th st. nw. Burial will be in Baltimore

Margaret Loring Jewell, age 96 years old. A gracious lady, our loving mother, died peacefully on March 19, 2011, after six days in Santa Rosa (CA) Memorial Hospital. Three of her children, Asa, Tisa, and Mary (her caregiver for the past nine years) were with her throughout those days. Margaret, first surviving daughter of Joshua and Emma Sladen Loring, was born in Springfield , MA, September 23, 1914. Her family moved to Natick, MA, where she graduated from Natick High School. In the mid-Twenties the family began spending summers in Drakes Island, Wells, ME. She married Asa H. Jewell of Lexington, KY, on April 15, 1937. They moved with their three young children to Franklin, TN, in 1942 where Asa joined his father and two brothers at Jewell Tobacco Warehouse. A fourth child was born in 1944. Our parents purchased the cottage next to our grandparents' cottage in Maine in 1946, and thereinafter we spent all our summers at Drakes Island. Above all mother exemplified kindness; she listened to people thus so many loved her. She was an artist all her life specializing in seascapes of her beloved Maine coast and portraits. She explored pottery, weaving, and many other art forms. She is predeceased by her beloved husband, Asa, mayor of Franklin from 1962-1969, who died in 1979 after 52 years of marriage, her parents and her two dear sisters. She is survived by her brother, Joshua Loring of Norfolk, MA, her brother-in-law, Tommie McAuley of Amherst, MA, and her four children, Tisa Jewell of Trinidad, CA; Asa (and Donna) Jewell of Kerrville, TX, Margi Jewell Gordon (and Bill Gordon) of Lexington, KY; and Mary Lord of Santa Rosa, CA. She is also survived by six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Memorial contributions may be made to a no-kill animal shelter in your area.
