LANCASTER, O., Feb. 26--Roaring out of the sky like a house afire, a six-jet Air Force bomber crashed and killed four crew members near here this afternoon.
The mammoth plane, an RB47 of the Strategic Air Command, missed only by feet one of the world's largest natural gas compressor stations. If it has been struck it would have gone up in a frightful din of lives and property.
The swept-wing plane hit six miles west of here only 200 feet from the Crawford Pumping Station at 1:30 p.m.
Big and Little Inch gas transmission lines pass through this station, which feeds gas to mot of the northeastern United States. Many large cities, including Cleveland and Pittsburgh, are at the receiving end of the pumps.
The dead were all first Lieutenants, Locbourne Air Force Base near Columbus announced. There were: Theodore L. Jenner, 26, Evanston, Ill., the aircraft commander; George M. Reiley, 25, Hyattsville, Md., pilot; Alvin B. Storey, 25, Charlotte, N.C., second pilot, and Earl N. Fogle, 27, Pittsburgh, the navigator.
Witnesses said the plane came in low over a hill, then plunged almost straight down near a vacant house. The crash tore a huge crater 28 feet deep and 250 feet around. Wreckage was scattered a half mile.
Reese Carpenter, an employe of the gas station, said the plane roared out of the low clouds at about a 45-degree angle.
"It sounded to me like it was in a power dive," he said.
"The scream of the engines was very loud. Then we saw it dive out of the clouds. Whe it hit, it sounded like a bomb going off. It blew parts of the plane all over the place."
