Mrs. Lucy Hoel Nye, who gained international recognition as a poet under the pen name, "Jean Palmer Nye," died Sunday at Shenandoah, Ia. Born in Omaha 85 years ago, Mrs. Nye was a member of the first graduating class at Omaha High School and taught in the South Omaha schools from 1872 to 1876, when she married John Palmer Nye of Shenandoah.
After rearing a family of 12 with a tablet and pencil for jotting ideas always near, Mrs. Nye began her work as poet. She was best know for familiar "home" poems but after spending six months in China in 1926-27, she wrote a prose book of travel, "Richshaw Rambles," and one of verse, "Oriental Powems." One book, "Leaves from the Book of Love," was praised by an eastern critic as "infinite riches in a little room."
She was a member of the American Penwomen, the International Poetry Society of Great Britain and American and the International Order of Bookfellows and for three years was superintendent of the Iowa Missionary socity and another three years was superintentendent of the Iowa Women's Christian Temperance union.

HENDERSON--John Stanley Hoffman, Jr., 66, Henderson, Kentucky, died at 3:26 a.m. Tuesday, September 30, 2003, at St. Mary's Medical Center in Evansville, Indiana.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Henderson, Kentucky, and was a bass player for Canoe Creek Bluegrass band. He was a partner with Stoll, Keenon & Park, LLP. His civil practice was principally trial litigation, workers' compensation law, product liability law, administrative law, school and education law, employment litigation, and eminent doman.
He graduated from Centre College with an A.B. in History, attended George Washington Law School in Washington, D. C. and earned his J.D. from the UK College of Law in December 1963. He was admitted to the Kentucky Barin 1964, whereupon he returned to Henderson, Kentucky, establishing his law practice.
In 1965, he was elected to the Kentucky House of Representatives. Upon his subsequent re-election, he was named Chairman of the House Appropriations and Revenue Committee. After retiring from the House of Representative, Mr. Hoffman served as Henderson County Judge from 1970 to 1974. As county judge, he was responsible for the creation of the Henderson County Riverport Authority, the construction of a new detention facility, a county-wide waste collection program, and Redbanks Nursing Home.
He served a special counsel to the Lieutenant governor during the 1974 General Assembly. He was named Secretary of the Cabinet for Natural Resources and Environmental Protection in 1975 and for his service, was awarded the Governor's Medallion for Distinguished Service.
Mr. Hoffman has chaired the Kentucky Board of Tax Appeals and the Henderson County Chamber of Commerce and has vice-chaired both the Kentucky Public Service Commission and the Utility Regulatory Commission. He has also served as a special justice of the Kentucky Supreme Court.
Survivors include his wife of 38 years, Joan F. Hoffman, one daughter, Johanna H. Mouser of Henderson, Kentucky; one son, John S. Hoffman III, of Aspen, Colorado; two grandchildren, John Christian Sida and Caroline Elizabeth Mouser, both of Henderson, Kentucky.
Services will be at 11 a.m. CDT Friday at First United Methodist Church in Henderson. The Reverends Gary A. Chapman, Rebecca Curry, David E. Latham, and John Conn will officiate. Burial will be in Fairmont Cemetery in Henderson, Kentucky. JOHN STANLEY HOFFMAN, 66, FORMER STATE REPRESENTATIVE
John Stanley Hoffman, Jr., a former state representative and Henderson County judge who was secretary of the Kentucky Department for Natural Resources and Environmental Protection in the 1970s, died of complications from a stroke yesterday at St. Mary's Medical Center in Evansville, Ind. He was 66 and lived in Henderson.
Mr. Hoffman, a partner with the law firm Stoll, Keenon & Park at his death, was elected to the first of two consecutive terns in the Kentucky House of Representatives in 1965. In his second term, he was chairman of the House Appropriations and Revenue Committee.
He was elected Henderson County judge in 1969. While county judge, he was instrumental in the creation of the Henderson County Riverport Authority, the construction of a new jail and development of a countywide waste collection program.
Then, in 1975, Gov. Julian Carroll tapped him to become secretary of the Department for Natural Resources and Environmental Protection. Mr. Hoffman gained the reputation of being a strict enforcer of environmental laws dealing with strip mining. He was awarded the Governor's Medallion for Distinguished Service.
He went on to become chairman of the Kentucky Board of Tax Appeals in 1976. Later he was vice chairman of the Kentucky Public Service Commission and the Utility Regulatory Commission. He also had been a special justice of the Kentucky Supreme Court.
"He was a straight-up guy you didn't have to worry about," said Lexington lawyer and former state legislator Terry McBrayer.
"Whatever Mr. Hoffman did as head of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection you knew it was fair," he said.
"He was sensitive to the outdoors.. and really cared about people in Kentucky," Mc Brayer said.
"John was probably the most respected person in Henderson for having..made a difference in Henderson," said David Thomason, a law partner and former Kentucky House speaker pro tem and Henderson county attorney.
As judge, Mr. Hoffman, he said "singlehandedly" passed a tax to build a jail.
"He stopped the deposit of Indiana garbage in the state. They were trying to bring it across the river and dump it in Henderson County," Thomason said.
Thomas said Henderson County got many new industries, including Anaconda Aluminum and Firestone Tire & Rubber, while Mr. Hoffman was judge.
Mr. Hoffman, a Henderson native, received a bachelor's degree in history from Centre College and his law degree from the University of Kentucky. He began practicing law in Henderson in 1964.
