His parents were both from Georgia, and died in Salem Precinct of this county. Our suject was born in Eddyville, Ky., in 1804, and received a good common school education from some sources, because he was a man of good average training and very intelligent. He came to Union when he was quite young. In 1823 he married Margaret Bishop, the daughter of Benjamin and Sallie (Hill) Bishop. she and her parents were born in Maryland, they removing to Union County in 111, when she was only four years of age. her father died about 1825, and her mother about 1856. This worth couple immediately began house-keeping. they were young, being only twenty and sixteen years old; but they were earnest and healthy and strong. The original farm that they settled consisted of one hundred acres; and this, with two slaves, one nine and the other twelve years of age, comprised their principal possessions. The land steadily increased, until there were 1,100 acres, and the emancipation law deprived them of eleven slaves. The house they first built is now occupied by their son-in-law, Stephen Sullivan. Their children are as follows: Sarah married Edward Willis, a famrer of Webster County, and has six children; Nancy married Stephen Sullivan, a farmer of Union County, and has six children; Thomas, a farmer of Union County, married Lizzie Montgomery, and has ten children; William, a farmer of Union County, married Mollie Pride, and has six children; Daniel, a farmer of Union County, married Alice Davis, and has five children. All these people are among the quietest, soberest and most highly respected citizens of their communities. During the war Mr. Hammack was arrested and taken to Caseyville, where he was made to give bond for good behavior, by the Federal authorities. In policitics he was a Democrat. he was a member of the Baptist Church for thirty years and an ornament to his profession. Mr. Hammack died in Union County in 1870.
