Tombstone He died on 19 April 1945 at the age of 69 in Omaha, Douglas, NE. obituary, The Hamburg (IA) Reporter, Thursday Morning, April 26, 1945 "Mose Givens, Prominent Citizen, Called" The entire community was shocked by the death of Mose Givens, a prominent citizen of Fremont county, which ensued in an Omaha hospital on Thursday of last week. Mose P. Givens, son of Ben and Charity Givens, was born on December 24, 1875, in Howard county, near Fayette, Missouri. At about the age of five he moved with his parents to the Payne vicinity, where he lived the remained of his life. After completing his schooling, he worked on the farm with his father. In 1911, he purchased the place where he resided throughout his lifetime. On Mary 6, 1913, he was united in marriage to Mary E. Blunk of Payne. To this union were born five children. In early manhood he joined the Odd Fellows and Masonic lodges and the Methodist church. Mrs Givens was interested and active in all community improvements, serving as a county representative, director of the school board and county committeeman of the democratic party. He was a willing worked in Red Cross and in war bond drives. For a year he had been an active worked in flood control projects, doing all he could to improve the fertility of the soil in the Missouri river valley. He was preceded in death by his wife on April 1927. He leaves to mourn his passing his children, Ben, now serving in the army in Germany, and his wife and daughter, Gail Ann of Hamburg; Mr. and Mrs. Jim Givens and children, James Vernon and Wayne of Hamburg; Frances Givens of Kansas City; Mr. and Mrs. Ted Nennemian and Jimmy of Hamburg; Ted serving in the army at Tucson, Arizona; and Mrs. Ruth Thiessen at home, and relatives and a host of friends. He will be greatly missed by his immediate neighbors, his friends in Hamburg and in Fremont county, of which he had been a faithful and loyal citizen. Memorial services were held Sunday afternoon at the Methodist church, conducted by the Rev. henry Tuele, and interment was in the Hamburg cemetery. Members of the I.O.O.F. order acted as honorary pall bearers and the Masonic order had charge at the grave. They all settled in Lincoln County, KY, in 17890. Benjamin married Hannah Riggs, of Kentucky, and settled in Howard County, Mo., in 1821. John married Martha Robinson, of Kentucky. They had seven children: James, Margaret, Samuel, Robert, Jane, Alexander R. and Martha. Of these children, Martha and Margaret died single in Kentucky; Robert, Jane and Alexander married and settled in Johnson county, Missouri; Samuel married Sarah S. Organ, of Indiana, and came to Missouri in 1823, and in 1825 removed to St. Charles County. He was a soldier in the Black Hawk War. They had eight children, five of whom are living. Mr. Givens brough his wedding coat (a blue "pigeon-tail") with him when he came to Missouri, and his wedding boots, which had never been wet. He also brought the gammon stick which he used for hanging hogs at butchering time. He was united in marriage to Mary Ann Knox, May 6, 1903. To this union were born two children, Opal Faye and Mildred Irene. They also raised a granddaughter from the age of 3 months, Darlene Marshall King, who now resides in Boulder, Colo. He is also survive by four other grandchildren, Phyllis Middleswart of Indianola, Donna Waters of Cedar Rapids, James Snyder of Newhall, Calif. and Robert Snyder of Des Moines, and 11 great-grandchildren. They lived at Ellston, Ia., after their marriage where he worked as a harness maker. While there, he belonged to the Methodist Church and led the choir for many years. They moved to Indianola in 1920. He was an active member of the First Methodist Church for many years. March 24, 1948, Mr. and Mrs. Glasgow joined the First Baptist Church. He operated Glasgow's Shoe Repair Shop on the south side of the square for more than 20 years, and will be remembered to many as the "Whistling Shoemaker."
