She had spent the Christmas holidays with her niece in Fairfax, and it was while visiting in Richmond that she was taken ill and removed to the hospital for treatment. Miss Friend was born in Danville July 20, 1877, daughter of the late John J. Friend and Mrs. Jean Boylan Green Friend--both members of old and distinguished Virginia families. During her long life here she had followed cultural pursuits, was socially active, and had promoted, since childhood, the works of the Church of the Epiphany of which she was one of the oldest communicants. "Miss Belle" as she was known to her friends had continued to live after the death of her parents in the family home on Holbroke Avenue, with her sister, Miss Annie Page Friend, who died several years ago. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Mrs. Clarence Buxton of Lorton is a surviving cousin. The funeral will be conducted Sunday, at 3 p.m. from F. W. Townes Funeral Home by the Reverend G. Ronald MacClintock with interment in the family square at Green Hill Cemetery. Friend one of Danville's oldest and best-known citizens passed to his reward this morning at half past eight o'clock at home home, 617 Holbrook avenue where he has been ill for the past four months. His condition during the past several days had been grave and growing weakness left small hope he could survive his illness. Mr. Friend was in his 78th year and had been an active figure in the community since early manhood or since he came to Danville from Petersburg, where he was born--descendant of a well-known Virginia family. The funeral will be held from the residence at half past four o'clock tomorrow afternoon. Interment to be made in Green Hill Cemetery John Gilliam Friend was a son of Charles Friend of Petersburg and moved to Danville in 1878. He engaged in the leaf tobacco business with Col. E. M. Wilkerson, the partnership continuing until 1896. Later Mr. Friend became identified with the Danville Wood and Coal Company with which he remained until his last illness. He was a devout member of the Episcopal church. His wife, nee Miss Green, survives with two daughters, Miss Annie Page Friend and Miss Belle Meade Friend. A suriviving sister is Mrs. Frank T.
