Mrs. Katherine Smith, wife of John P. Smith, was found dead in her room on Clarksville street Monday afternoon. She had retired after dinner, as was her custom, to take a nap and when her daughter, Mrs. Alice Anderson went to arouse her shortly after 4 o'clock, she was found to be cold in death. From the appearance of the body the end had come without a struggle. Mrs. Smith was almost 82 years of age and for several years had been very feeble. Death is thought to have been due to heart failure.
She was a member of the Methodist church. Her husband, a daughter, Mrs. Alice Archdeacon, and two sons, E. B. Smith of Pembroke and Finis Smith of Illinois survive. Another son, John W. Smith, for many years a well-known liveryman of this city, died several years ago.
Mrs. Smith was born in Buckingham county, Va., Aug. 6, 1826, and whe she was four years old, her parents moved to this county. She had lived in and near Elkton ever since, and had been married 63 years.
The burial took place in Glenwood Cemetery Tuesday afternoon, the Rev. Geo. E. Foskett conducting services at the grave.

Special to the New York Times
GREENWICH, Conn. Aug. 24--Mrs. Nellie Fitch Singleton, one-time president of the New York branch of the Southern Women's Educational Alliance, now the Alliance for the Guidance of Rural Youth, died yesterday at her home here at 80 Dayton Avenue after a long illness. She was 79 years old.
A member of an old family in Louisville, Ky., Mrs. Singleton was born there, a daughter of the late Benjamin Franklin Fitch, who owned an operated a large Louisville department store, and the late Mrs. Florence E. Wilson Fitch. She lived in Evanston, Ill., before moving to New York and, finally, to Greenwich.

The alliance also sent field workers to rural Southern schools, studied the social needs of the children in them and advised teachers and local authorities. Exhibitions were held here of the work of the alliance and numerous theatrical benefits were given for it. At her death Mrs. Singleton was a trustee of the present alliance, which has headquarters in Washington, D.C.
Mrs. Singleton was once president of the Evanston Drama Club and was a member of the New York chapter of the National Society of Colonial Dames.
