The son of the late Frederick Vincent and Mary Lemasters Fox, he was born on Aug. 27, 1923, in Pine Grove,W.Va. The youngest of three children, he is preceded in death by sisters, Wilma Gump of South Charleston, and Ellen Wilcox, of Pine Grove. He is also preceded in death by LaRoss Batson Fox, wife of 50 years.
Bill is survived by son and daughter-in-law, Phillip and Judy Fox, grandson, Phillip, Jr. and great-grandson, Phillip III, all of St. Albans, granddaughter, Susan Fox, great-grandchildren, Alex and Caitlin Crum, all of Columbus, Ohio; son, Raymond of Woodleaf, N.C., daughter-in-law, Jeanna Sue, grandson, Sean and Ray Fox, all of St. Albans, and brother-in-law, Gerald Gump of South Charleston.
Bill was a member of St. Andrews United Methodist Church, St. Albans. Bill served in the U. S. Army from June 1943 to November 1945. "Private Fox" received basic training in the Air Force and Infantry. As a Special Vehicle Operator, he operated a refueling unit, transporting gasoline from the pumps to the airstrips, refueling B-25s and A-20s. As a Rifleman, he served in combat as part of Company A 1st Division (aka Big Red 1) 18th Infantry in Germany. As a member of the rifle squad, he did scouting, patroling, handled M-1 rifles, bayonet and hand grenades. Bill received the Purple Heart as a result of a shoulder injury. he worked at Union Carbide, South Charleston as a chemical operator on the "island" from 1947 to 1983. he also has been very active in Charleston 153 Masonic Temple, 32nd Degree, Scottish Rite, Beni Kedem Temple, American Legion Post 73, Disabled American Veterans and Alzheimer's Association Support Group. he was a 50-year member of the Charleston 153 Masonic Temple. Bill has a "camp" in Pocahontas County near the Williams River, where he enjoyed hunting and fishing. he was an accomplished woodworker (having made desks, canes, bookcases, and grandfather clocks), enjoyed gardeing, coin collecting and reading Louis L'Amour novels. For all the years he lived on Jefferson Ave., you could not find a better friend to his neighbors (he would drive anyone to the store or bank) and they ate out together several times a week.
Casdorph & Curry Funeral Home in St. Albans is in charge of arrangements. A gathering of family and friends will be from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home on Friday, Sept. 29. Funeral services will be on Saturday, Sept. 30, at 1 p.m. at Casdorph & Curry Funeral Home with the Rev. Loretta Isaiah officiating. Graveside services will follow at Cunningham Memorial Park with Masonic graveside service where Bill will be laid to rest beside his beloved LaRoss. In lieu of flowers, Bill had requested donations be made to the Alzheimers Association, WV Chapter, 1111 Lee St. E., Charleston, WV 25301.
