REAL LIFE IN SKAGWAY TOWN,
"Wilkie Edwards Comes to Omaha With a Story of Klondike Hardships"
"Spinal Meningitis Cuts a Wide Swath in the Banks of Dismayed Gold Seekers"
"Rumors of Strikes Sent Out as Facts--Some Queer Instances of the Dead Coming to Life Again"
"The excitement of Skagway is dying out," remarked Mr. Wilkie Edwards, a brother of Mrs. Clement Chase, who has just returned from the metropolis of the Klondike. "Most of the reported strikes are fakes, which originated as rumors, and were sent out as facts in the press dispatches."
"There has been but one strike recently that amounted to anything," he continued. The recently reported find within a small walk of the Skagway post-office was evolved from the imaginative mind of some ambitious space writer."
"The fact is Skagway does not present the lively appearance with which it is credited. Few people are going into the interior. Until the Yukon opens up, which will be some time in June, there will be no large influx, although people there are planning for a deluge of gold hunters then. Thousands of adventurers are stalled on the way now. They can't get through, and I have no doubt there is much suffering of which we never hear."
DISEASE AT SKAGWAY
"Deaths from spinal meningitis are frightfully numerous at Skagway. The terrible disease, cuts a wide swatch, and whre it attacks it is almost invariably fatal. It is brought on chiefly by the carelessness of the victims. People forget they are in a rigorous climate, and, in a state of exhaustion after their exertions, they take too little precautions to protect themselves from the cutting winds which prevail there. The result is that the disease finds easy marks. People drop dead in the most unexpected way. I remember one instance where a man was found dead, seated on his sled, where he had sunk exhausted to rest himself."
"The way reports of deaths circulate up there is a marvel. For instance, a San Francisco paper had a large cut illustrating the dying condition of Colonel Fisher of San Francisco, a friend of Curtiss C. Turner, who has a real estate office at Skagway. It pictured him with both legs amputated and horribly frozen in the country near Dyen. The fact was he had not left Skagway at all."
Another instance was the reported death of William B. Sampson, postmaster of Skagway, a young fellow whose father is a newspaper man at Salina, Kas. Sampson was reported dead from spinal meningitis no less than six times. These reports were very near the truth. The announcement of his death was received, his death notice written at Salina and a number of condolences received by Sampson senior from members of the newspaper fraternity and friends. Young Sampson, in a weakened condition, but with the prospect of living many years yet, has, by this, returned, or will return, to read his father's paper and find out what a promising young man he is."
DIZZY WHIRL OF WHEELS
"The stories of wide open gambling at Skagway are not exaggerated," continued Mr. Edwards. "The usual devices are employed to catch the suckers, such as any gambling house contains. But, the greatest 'skin' scheme is called the 'cloth game.' It consists of a dial which always points right to suit the house. The sucker can't possibly win, and it is the best 'sure thing'--for the proprietor--in the Klondike."
"Real estate values at Skagway are flighty. Lots that sold for $100 last tear are now bringing from $500 to $3,000. While I was there prices dropped down. It all depends on the influx of people. The fact is, Skagway was a cheap town during my visit. People hand onto their dough like grim death after being worked a time or two."
The post-office facilities are miserable. The day before I left I stood an hour and a half in line trying to get in, and then gave up in despair. The two assistants are insufficient or incompetent to cope with the immense volume of mail." Regarding the rectitude of the Skagway, Mr. Edwards had this to say:
"The era of blood-curdling and frequent murders is ended. The vigilance committee, with a rude court, has frightened the desperate characters so that their crimes are of less magnitude. The toughs continue themselves to holdups, which are of daily occurrence. There is no mercy shown a murderer since the killing of the marshal and subsequent death of his wife, told in the press dispatches."
On the whole, Skagway cannot be a very attractive summer residence, according to Mr. Edwards. The pitiful funeral processions, the disposing of bodies in wretched boxes and suffering of the sick are a dark setting to the glittering prospects that allure so many to the Klondike. Amopng the deaths of friends of Mr. Edwards was that of John Bentley, of Sheridan,Ia., who succumbed a short time ago.
