JOHN W. CRISWELL
John W. Criswell, a well-known farmer of Union district, was born in Lee county, Iowa, in 1849, the son of Thomas and Matilda Blair Criswell, both of whom were natives of Virginia. The father, who was a book binder by trade, later, a civil engineer, is still living at the age of seventy-one years, but the mother died in April, 1889, at the age of sixty-seven years. These parents reared seven children: Margaretta, wife of James McClannahan; Rebecca, wife of George Mirarnar; John W., Robert B.; Susan, wife of Samuel Morris; Alice I., wife of William Nickerson, and William. In 1864, John Criswell, though then but a boy, enlisted in Company A, Seventeenth West Virginia regiment, under Col. John McDonald, and saw active service, having on one occasion, to make a march of sixteen miles barefooted, in snow and slush, an experience from which he has not yet fully recovered. He served with bravery and patriotism until his discharge in July, 1865, at Wheeling. Returning home, he engaged in farming, which has since been his occupation, and in which he has achieved a high degree of success. In 1869, Mr. Criswell was married to Catherine Stipes, by whom he had one child, but both are now deceased. In 1878, he wedded Josephine Merinar, daughter of Benjamin and Jane Merinar, and they have nine children: George D., deceased; Charles M., Henry N., William W., John S., deceased; Martha B., Ruth R., Rex A., and Emma V. Mr. Criswell is a member of the Disciples church, and of the G.A.R. and in politics a republican.

CHURCH CRISWELL OF GUTHRIE DIES
"Funeral Service Monday Afternoon For Farmer, Stockman"
Noah Church Criswell, 78, well known farmer and stockman in south Calloway, died unexpectedly Saturday morning at 8 o'clock at his home within two miles of Guthrie. He had been suffering with a heart condition for the past four or five years. He had improved recently, and his death came as a shock to his family and friends.
Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the Guthrie Presbyterian Church of which he had long been a member.
Mr. Criswell was born on October 7, 1891 one of eight children of the late Joseph Calvin and Bettie Moore Criswell. He was the last member of his family which included seven girls and the one son. On June 22, 1904 he and Miss Julia Loyd were married.
Surviving is his wife and a number of nieces and nephews.
Mr. Criswell lived on the home place for seventy years.

TERRY CRITCHFIELD, banker, is a native of Indiana, and was born in Harrison county, February 21, 1834. Came to Illinois with his parents when comparatively young, where he was educated and reared. In April, 1855, came to Kansas, and turned his attention to buying real esate, operating principally in Jefferson, Franklin and Leavenworth counties. The troubles were then at their height, and Mr. C. being an outspoken Free-state man, had his share of them. One one occasion he was coming up the Missouri on a steamboat that was loaded with passengers, and a vote was taken to see how the crowd stood on the goose question, so to speak. It was ascertained that there was one Free-soil vote cast. Another vote was taken and the same solitary vote came to the front. It was soon ascertained that Mr. Crutchfield was the man that cast the vote, and revolvers were flourished and threats made, and they made it very uncomfortable for him all the way up, so much so, in fact, he did not expect to reach the shore alive. When the steamer reached Leavenworth, he discovered that quite a number of the passengers were Free-state men, or professed to be at least,and some of them had taken a small part in persecuting him. In 1859, he located permanently in Oskaloosa, the county seat of Jefferson County, attending to his real estate affairs and other business. In 1865, he embarked in merchandising, in which he is still interested. In 1871, he was elected to the Legislature by the Republican party, and re-elected in 1875 by the Democratic party. He had always been a Republican until 1872, when he voted for Horace Greeley, this was the turning point. Mr. C. has also held several county offices, to which he was re-elected in former years. Has also been Justice of the Peace and other township offices. There are but a few among the old settlers better known. In September, 1880, he engaged in the banking business. He is the orginator and owner of the Jefferson County Bank at Oskaloosa, Kansas. He is a member of the Oskaloose Lodge No. 14, A. F. & A. M. and Chapter No. 9, of which he is high priest. he was married in November, 1858, to Miss Lucinda C. Walters, of Fulton county, ILl. They have four children--M. S., Caddie, May and Kate.

Mr. Terry Critchfield died at 10 oclock last Tuesday morning, from trouble of long standing, in one of his limbs. On Sunday morning last is limb was amputated but this did not good and he passed away on Tuesday. We have no particulars concerning the funeral. Parents: Jesse CRITCHFIELD and Elizabeth BASS.
