Hundreds of Madison radio listeners have heard the voice of John Connery in such programs as "The Aldrich Family" "Great Plays" "Gang Busters" "Star Theater" and others. Members of older generations have seen him on the stage.
John Connery died Wednesday night, and while funeral services were being held Saturday in Springfield, Ill., his friends, and friends of his sister, Mrs. Harriet McCarty, and his nephew, Harold B. McCarty, were reading this note, died Sept. 14.
John Connery's big, friendly heart stopped that night.
Death came painlessly and peacefully at the home of his nephew in Sunset Village, Madison, Wis., where he had been visiting for the past six weeks.
"Well-ll, gues I'll take a little walk," John had said about 11:00 p.m. We found him a few minutes later on the front lawn. No struggle, not outcry. Life on this earth for John Connery had ended quietly.
The evening had been marked by normal activities--a hearty super which John had relished immensely, some lively conversation sparked by John's special sense of humor, a bit of reading, and a couple of strolls about the place to satisfy his urge for action. Then came his exit.
During the weeks befoe, we had had many a chuckle over John's anecdotes of the theater, as we drew from him stories of his experiences with John Barrymore's "Hamlet" production, Arthur Hopkins' "Machinal" with Clark Gable and Zita Johnson, "Bachelor Born," "Lysistrata," "You Can't Take It With You," in summer stock with Josephine Hull, and many others. You have something of his theater record perhaps--of his years as leading man with Beatrice Morgan in the B. F. Keith stock company in New York, of his experience in a great variety of Shakespearean roles with the touring companies of Charles B. Hanford and Robert B. Manitell.
But not many know of his early struggles--his meager schooling, his work as a boy in a coal mine in central Illinois, at a paper mill, in shops and railroad yards. "Can't drive an automobile but just give me a big steam locomotive and I'll show you something," John used to say.
He was about 26 when he discovered the possibilities of his voice and his talent for the theater. There came a year of study at a school for dramatic arts in Chicago where he supported himself by working nights at a big mail order house. A year in school, then he took to the road with the Charles B. Hanford Company. And there followed a contribution of almost 50 years of theatrical servie in the entertainment of people of this country.
That powerful, resonant, and flexible voice was described by John himself on his professional application card for radio directors "Voice Range: Baby gurgle to hog calling." It was that flexibility supported by a lively, unbounded imagination which enabled him to perform with such skill on the air in "Great Plays," "The Aldrich Family," "Lorenzo Jones," "Gang Busters," "Texaco Star Theatre," "American School of the Air," "Five Star Final," and many other radio dramatizations.
John Connery was 74, almost 75, when he stepped outside to "take a little walk." That fact comes as a surprise to many who knew his physical vitality and vigorous spirit. Those qualities unquestionably came from a lifetime of clean living, genuine and unselfish interest in others, and a basically bright optimistic view of the future.
"The world doesn't owe me anything," John said not long ago. "God has been good. I've been anble to help a few less fortunate than myself, and perhaps I've brought a little pleasure to others. If anything happens, I hope family and friends will just go on--as they do now--expecting to hear from me in a month or so, Cheerio."
From Act III of Shakespeare's "Macbeth" comes a line that was a favorite of John Connery's "Stand not again the order of your going, but go at once." He quoted it often when a part, conversation, or social gathering of any sort had passed its peak.
