Thomas Branch Cheatham, veteran Conferate soldier and for the past 45 years a resident of Henderson county, passed away at 7:55 o'clock last night at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Mattie Baskett, 628 Center street, at the age of 84 years and 7 months, following a brief illness caused by stomach trouble and his advanced years.
Funeral services will be conducted from the residence, 678 Center street, Thursday afternoon, at 2 o'clock. Burial will be in Fernwood cemetery. The pallbearers are annouced as follows: Walter Server, Will Dempewolf, Louis Wathen, Miley Baskett, Herman Keifer and Albert Harding.
Mr. Cheatham was born in Lunenburg county, Virginia, on August 12, 1844, the son of Branch and Minerva Cheatham. At the age of 19 years, the Civil war then being in progress, he enlisted under the command of General Wise in the Seventeenth Confederate infantry, serving in many engagements between northern and southern troups during the years 1863 and 1864. In batter near Petersburg, Va., he suffered the loss of his left leg.
In May 8, 1867, at the age of 23 years, he took as his bride Miss Emma Lester, also of Lunenburg, Virginia. To this union in subsequent years were born eight children, seven of whom survive their father's death.
Mr. Cheatham and his family moved to Henderson county in November, 1884, and, until his advanced age forced retirement he devoted his time to farming, at which he was considered an outstanding success.
Mrs. Cheatham passed away on February 16, 1924, to be followed shortly by their oldest son, George, who died on August 1, 1924.
Those of his immediate family surviving him are Mrs. Mattie Baskett, Fred Cheatham, Branch Cheatham, Mrs. Lee Baskett, Miss Sallie Cheatham, all of Henderson and Mrs. Emma Pierce and Jack Cheatham of Chicago. In addition to the extensive circle of friends who join his family in mourning his death he leaves nineteen grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren.
