WILLIAM THOMAS BUCKINGHAM
Records indicate that the Buckinghams were some of the earliest settlers of Stewart County. WGT Buckingham married Nancy Gardner and they had 13 children. Peter Terry Buckingham (b. 1835) was one of these children.
Peter Terry married and they had six children. After his first wife died, he married Martha Buchanan and together had six children, Clarissa (P.H. Smith), Ida (Jeff Myers), Betsy (Ples Barnes), Belle (Hugh Allen), Ann (Bill Gilbert), and William Thomas, the head of our family.
William Thomas Buckingham (b. 1869) later moved to Montgomery County and married Ollie Harris. They had four children: Deward, Julius, Lyman and Mabel. When Ollie died from TB, he took the three boys and went to Texas to find work. His daughter was cared for by relatives during his absence.
Upon his return from Texas, he took his young daughter to a dressmaker who was a widow he knew previously to have some clothes made. Eula Lomax Dority had three children: Foy Dority (Marie Lyle), Ethel Dority (Leslie Rye) and Eunice Dority. She and William Thomas married in 1913 and combined their families. They quickly added three more children: Rex Cornell Buckingham (Clara Biter), Dorris Elmo Buckingham (Jennie Lowry) and Edwin Dale Buckingham (Juene Haley) to their household.
William Thomas was a sharecropper, but later bought a small farm in the area of Shiloh known as Possum Hollow. He and his family built a log house and farmed the land, raised food for the family, some tobacco and other things they could sell. Most of his sisters and their families lived in the same area of Montgomery.
Times were hard in the 1930s and opportunities were few, so several children moved to Michigan to get jobs. Others went to Nashville where opportunities seemed more plentiful. One went out west and another went to North Carolina. Two of the children, Lyman and Cornell made their home in Montgomery County all their lives. All the other children returned to Montgomery County often and kept their ties to family and friends there. Parents: Peter Terry BUCKINGHAM and Martha Cordelia BUCHANAN.

Sarah Buckman Selders, 92, of Overland Park, KS passed away Jan. 29, 2011. "Sae Sae" as she was named by nieces and nephews was born in Uniontown, KY. At age 11, she arrived in Kansas City by train with her family and her canary. During her years at Westport High School, her southern charm, with and high moral standards caught the attention and admiration of her peers including her husband to be, Loyd. Their love for one another, and their shared love for the game of tennis, resulted in the marriage in 1939. As members of the Rockhill Tennis Club for over 50 years, they won a number of doubles tournaments as well as the hearts of many friends. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with cake, punch, and a tennis tournament. Sarah continued to play tennis at KC Racquet and the Overland Park Racquet Club after Loyd passed away in 1991. She competed successfully several years in the Women's Senior Nationals and she persisted in tennis for exercise until she was 88 years old. During their marriage, she and Loyd took great pride in raising 2 daughters, proving a wonderful moral home and quality educational experiences. Nothing was more important that guiding and providing whatever was needed for her family. Her hospitality and great sense of humor endeared her to all her family and many friends. She volunteered at the Shawnee Mission Medical Center, drove a van for the Red Cross and worked with handicapped children at her church. She helped anyone in need by providing a meal, a ride, comfort or just a good laugh. Sarah never knew a stranger. She was a long time member of the Village Presbyterian Church. When her two daughters became Jehovah's Witnesses, she enjoyed a personal Bible study and sttending meetings at the Kingdom Hall. Her last three years were spent receiving the utmost in loving care at The Court of Overland Park where she continued to win more hearts. The caregivers dubbed her "the Queen." She challenged each one to a tennis match and invited all she met to have lunch at Rockhill. How fitting her favority pastime was on eh courts and she spent her last days at The Court. Sarah was preceded in death by a brother Rudy Buckman and the love of her life, Loyd. She is survived by her two daughters, Susan Selders Bondurant of Kansas City North and Janet Selders of St. Louis, MO; three granddaughters, Amy Bondurant Milton of Yuma, AZ, Joell Bondurant, Kansas City North, and Evanne Bondurant, San Diego, CA. Three great grandchildren, Ellie, Anna and Wyatt Milton along with a number of nieces and nephews and many dear friends. Joell and Evanne describe Grand Sae Sae not only as the sweetest, most hospitable grandma ever, but as a fashion icon, dating expert and amateur comedian. All who knew her would describe her as a generous, class, loving lady who put family first and remained young at hear. She will be sorely missed by all. Game, Set, Match, Championship, Sarah Selders.
